Okay, I tried the search functions, I couldn't find anything like this. I guess I expected the thread I was looking for to be more recent and didn't bother going through the whole list. Or maybe I used too many search terms. If someone wants to merge this thread, that's fine.

Saw this in a test screening. Well, not sure it was a test screening, but got handed free tickets, but no one asked me my opinion.

I'm quite impressed with the visual style of the movie (at least, from what I saw on the poster and some screenshot). Can't wait to finally see it.

Paltrow annoyed the hell out of me, and generally I'm okay with her.
The screenplay gave me problems--the dialogue specifically. Gwyneth Paltrow's character is one of those movie characters that explains everything that happens in a scene. For instance, if she walks into a room full of dynamite, and the boxes are labelled dynamite, she'll say, "Oh no! Dynamite!" Or, if they are about to crash, she'll say something like, "Oh no, we're about to crash and die!" It was hard to take.

I didn't know Sean Connery was ever in gay porn.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow: Who was this movie marketed to?
When I saw SCTWT, the trailers seemed to be all over the placed. Usually, you go and see a movie and the trailers seemed to be geared towards a specific demographic, but the trailers before this movie ranged from the kiddie type fare such as Spongebob Squarepants to trailers for movies adults would be interested in, like Ray. I don't think I've ever sat through trailers that have been more different from the last one.

That's weird... at my screening, all the trailers were mostly for kids flicks. Spongebob, Lemony Snicket, Incredibles....but then there was a trailer for Spanglish... Although it should be said that the audience was also very diverse, lots of kids but lots of adults as well.

References to other movies in Sky Captain
I really enjoyed the movie, and I may need to rewatch it to catch all the classic references. My first viewing I caught verbal references to Raiders of the Lost Ark and Marathon Man and visual references to The Empire Strikes Back and King Kong. What else is in there?

Metropolis in the female maria character.
Empire Strikes Back had a bigger reference to which landing pad they were told to set down on.
Wizard of Oz is what was playing at the screening. War of the worlds featured the same beam sound effect when they were taking the generators.
