Lots of great examples mentioned - but this was even worse:

The original VHS release of the CinemaScope New Faces of 1952 wasn't even pand and scan - they just took the center of the picture and lopped off the sides. The movie, being one of the early widescreen efforts, tried to make use of the new ratio, and as a result there were tmes when there was nobody on screen!

I saw this movie a few times in P&S when I was younger, and obviously at the time I never thought much of it. When I recently got the DVD, I was AMAZED at how much there was going on on screen that just wasn't there in the P&S version. A large amount of the choreography is just... missing. It's so weird that most people's association of Grease is probably that butchery of it (as mine was until recently).

The Music Man. Almost every scene has people frame to frame. They're always cutting out someone.
