Torque: Afterthoughts
Hi,
Just got back from seeing Torque. I was thoroughly entertained. It's basically all action, hot girls, and fast motorcycles. If you enjoyed movies like Fast and the Furious, etc, you will enjoy this one.
There are of course always haters who think they're too cool for movies like these, so I'll say this: If you didn't like the trailer, you probably weren't going to like this movie anyways.
Visually flashy, little substance, and it doesn't take itself seriously. It knows it has little plot, but who cares? If you went to a movie called "Torque" I seriously doubt you were going to for the acting and the plot. Which is why critics wil trash this movie but I think people who want to be entertained will get their money's worth.
I thought first time film director Joseph Kahn did an excellent job, but then again I love flashy style. He's a veteran of hundreds of music videos (U2, Eminem, Britney Spears), and it obviously shows. The movie is visual overload to the max, perhaps too much. It looks, feels, and plays like a long music video. Sometmes even like a video game. (It ends up I just read that was his intention; here's an interesting interview on Torque's hyperrealistic style)

You take techniques that are good for a 3 minute video and fully develop them into an 82 minute feature and the effects could backfire, as I think they did towards the end. Everything is overkill, and I thought the critics said it best when they said the finale made the Matrix Revolutions finale seem "documentary like in realism." That's how over the top this film is. When motorcycles zip down the street, glass shatters and explodes. People were saying, "WTF?"
"It's not realistic, but hey, who cares cause it looks cool." That's the mindset you have to adopt when you watch this film. Every shot is a "money shot," so to speak. If you can deal with that, then you'll have a good time.
I just read a critic's review which I think summed it well:
"The first three minutes convince us we're are looking at a commercial before the feature begins. Then we realize the whole movie will look like this. It's flashy, skillful work, as much CGI as real, but that's the name of the game"
I should also add if you enjoyed the film, you should also go to mtv.com to see Britney Spears's new video "Toxic," which Kahn also directed, and which also features motorcycles and Torque star Martin Henderson.
I knew what the movie was going to be like, and so for me it delivered. I'm curious to what you guys (and girls) thought.

Well it looks like you went into it with an open mind, knew what you were in for, and had a good time. What more can we ask for from a movie, right?
Oh, I'm sure the craps are coming..can't stop them, but I'm checking this out tomorrow and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm hoping it leaves a silly grin on my face when all is said and done.

I liked Fast and Furious and 2F2F, but after I watched the trailer I decided to pass, and that's all I have to say about that.(if you can't say anything nice......) I'll rent the DVD.

I checked it out today, as well.
I found it more enjoyable than 2 Fast, 2 Furious--mainly because it didn't take itself half as seriously.
Anyway, there were some pretty cool scenes. I really think this is one of those movies that you decide whether or not you'll liked it based off the trailer alone. Looks like something you'd enjoy? Go for it. Looks brainless and not up your alley? Don't bother.
All told, still a pretty awful film though. But really, I think that's what everyone is expecting anyway.

good advice. it's amazing how many people forget this. they go watch the movie anyway, even if they hated the trailer. If you go to a movie, where you hated the trailer, you better expect not to like the movie too. now if you go to a movie where you hated the trailer, but then ended up liking the movie, then it is serendipitous (one of the more fascinating movie experiences actually)
one of the odd things about Hollywood is that they will let the director direct a 100 million dollar movie, but they won't let them touch the trailer. that's up to the marketing guys. hence the sometimes wonderous disconnect you have between a trailer and an actual movie. but most of the time, if the trailer sucks, so does the movie.

Saw parts of it on my break and it sucked the big ones. Maybe I have to watch the whole movie to really get into it. I was disapointed as I liked Fast and the Furious and SWAT. XXX was crap, 2f 2f was okay. The local critic raved about this movie stating, it had cool visuals, great editing and it didn't take itself too seriously. Visually, it can't compete with Michael Bay's movies including his low budget Bad Boys.

incredibly lame motorcycle fights + glass exploding like the sr-71 just flew by at mach 4 = completely moronic. Im all for popcorn flicks, I even liked xXx... but torque is just stupid.

I liked fast and furious and kinda liked xXx and 2F2F... I even liked the trailer for Torque and was excited to see it. I knew it would be stupid. I didn't like it though. It clocked in at only 81 minutes or something and it seemed like it was 2 and a half hours long. I liked a few things about it, but overall it just kinda missed the target...
