Last night, I finished the Silmarillion. And I don't mean the part that says "Here ends the tale of the Silmarillion," I mean, all of that, plus all the stuff about Numenor, plus "Of The Rings Of Power And The Third Age." I am DONE!

In the end, while some passages may have felt like drudgery, it was a really great read. Now I'm making my way on to The Hobbit, and then, of course, The Lord of the Rings.

Just had to share my achievement, knowing someone could relate.

I think you deserve a friggin' medal for making it all the way through that thing!

Congrats. I love the Sil, though as a history buff I don't find the text as boring as some.... . You'll find the Hobbit a bit low key and simple, and the LOTR is in between the Sil and the Hobbit in tone and content.

Now the question is, can you make it through the Sil a second time.

I think it might actually be easier a second time through, because this time, I'll know more of who is who and won't have to spend every two minutes going to the glossary of names just to keep things straight.

2nd time though is much better. Ive read it twice in the last few years and still cant remember half the stuff. There are great stories in it once the elves start heading east.

I've tried to finish the damn thing at least five times. No success so far.

After reading parts of the History of Midle Earth Volumes 1 to 10, and book of lost tales by Christopher Tolkien, I find the Silmarillion to be light reading, and I am not even joking.

I wouldn't be surprised.

After the release of the Return Of The King movie, I pulled out my old Silmarillion paperback. I never made it through the first time. I'm trying to make it through this time.

After you read the Silm, next time you read LOTR you notice seemingly throwaway lines and references now have added meaning. I actually made it through the Silm before I got through LOTR. Even to this day I feel more confident discussing S than LOTR because I've read it more times.

I just finished The Silmarillion today. It was my third attempt - it's not so much that I lost interest the first two times, but that I read a bit, then left it for a few weeks, and then couldn't carry on reading because I had no idea what was going on ^^;

Even though I found it difficult to read (SO MANY NAMES!), it became much easier around halfway through, and most of it was very interesting to read. I'm very glad I finally got round to finishing it.
