Why wasn't Mordor destroyed 3000 years earlier?
I was wondering why, after the ring was cut off from Saron, Middle Earth didn't band together for one last time and just destroy the entire area called Mordor.
Am I missing something? It just seems like Saron's buildings and other potential adversaries were left to their own devices after his physical destruction. Why? I would have leveled Mordor.
But alas, we wouldn't be here today, watching a great trilogy.

You are quite incorrect. I believe that the Silmarillion details how (in the first War of the Ring) Orcs were destroyed in a rout and were forced underground much like the Moria Orcs you saw in FOTR, and Barad-Dur, Sauron's Dark Tower, was razed to the ground...however, its foundations were unable to be destroyed by the Men of the West and Elves since Sauron made them with powerful magic, much like the One Ring. Later when Sauron took shape again in the Third Age, Barad-Dur was rebuilt and his Orcs multiplied in the open again, as Gandalf said.

Ahah. Ok. I wish there was more footage of the reconstruction.

Jepthah is correct. Also, the Mordor gate with the towers protecting the passage into Mordor was built by the Gondorians to watch over the Mordor plains (as was the tower of Minas Morgul originally called Minas Ithel). But the watch of men became lax and when Sauron started regain his strength the towers were refortified with the forces of Mordor.

A worthwhile investment is the books on tape version. It makes it a lot easier to get through. They are kind of an oral tale anyway, so it makes sense to listen to them. Martin Shaw performs it very well.

If it was destryoed 3000 yrs earlier, we wouldn't have Lord of the Rings. Just imagine all the other would-be epics we're missing because of the other worlds that have already been destroyed.
