LOTR Special Extended Edition will open in February 14th.I got the dates for FOTR which opens in Tokyo on the 10th January till 23rd and TTT which open on 24th January till 6th February.
Do you have any explanations or theories as to why the LOTR films have so drastically underperformed in Japan? I have heard everything from bad subtitling to Harry Potter saboteurs ...I mean, it's ridiculous, TTT actually bucked the worldwide trend there and made less than FOTR!

First of all it's 3 hours and when they hear about the running hour most of them are not interested in watching the movie. And the story is in 3 parts. The ticket prices for the movie is $16 per show. And the Extended Edition DVD's of the 4 pc disk sell for $80 + .Thats the main reason. Harry porter is or I am SAM is much more to thier likings. So sadly

It doesn't open till Feb 14 - everyone in Japan has already seen a bootleg by then.

Are you kidding? You can get bootleg DVDs VERY easily in Japan, let alone VCDs that you can buy on street corners.

You're thinking of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Phillipines, etc.. not Japan.

I've never been to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or the Phillipines.

But bootlegs are EVERYWHERE in Japan - DVDs more than VCDs, I noticed. But that was a year ago. The bootlegs are probably on BluRay by this time.

Well, I think we can all forget about ROTK beating Spidermans record, havent seen Tuesdays figures, but since Monday it only made over 2 million I would say that reaching $300 million by wednesday is incredibly unlikely.

Oh well, still impressiveB.O. none the less

I have not seen bootlegs selling in the streets like that much freely, since I been here for 10 years.I have only once saw them in Akihabara by someguy with some catalog. If thats what you mean.Or the Porn underground dvd's which is sold at Kabukicho DVD shops or Ikebukuro.
They are not sold in the streets everywhere and VCD's are not the format the Japanese people prefer. There was Laserdisk and now dvd.Not VCD's.

Keeping the first page up to date...

Also, I've always had a problem with the inflation/tickets sold
arguement. The fact that those top movies didn't have a 4 to 6
month dvd window to deal with and many people that have the
home theaters that are available now (and don't even go to
theaters anymore). It's just an entire different lifestyle now.

I think that arguement is as absurd as saying that if the LOTR
trilogy (that we have today) was released back then, it would've
sold more tickets. Even though the technology wasn't there back
then, it doesn't matter.

Can't compare apples to oranges accurately

Updated to day 23. ROTK will pass $300 million today. Can it win
another weekend? It is losing some steam. It's interesting to
note that Titanic was at about $170 million at this point (3 weeks
into release)

If it is #1 for a fourth weekend, it will be the first film to do so since
Spoiler:
The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
If it is #1 for a fifth weekend, it will be the first film to do so since
Spoiler:
The Sixth Sense in 1999!

It will tough to stay at #1 this weekend for RotK. Friday numbers show Big Fish ahead of RotK, $4,525,000 to $3,610,000. I do think RotK will close the gap a bit over the weekend. It should be a close race.

I wouldn't be too upset by Big Fish trading places with it...at least it's not Just Married bumping The Two Towers after 3 weeks...sheesh.

I'm lowering my estimate from 425 to 375-400... it's sinking too fast. Even with legs, I now think it's going to settle in between SpMan and Jurassic.

Still a nice showing.

I think ROTK is still gonna be #1 this weekend...

It's been tracking extremely closely to TTT for about a week and a half now and it's a little less than 30 million ahead overall. I can't see it doing any better than keeping pace with TTT and probably losing a little ground because more people saw ROTK earlier (same as the pattern was between TTT and FOTR). I'm almost certain it will finish between 360 and 370 million now.

Nothing to sneeze at and it will pass Nemo and be the highest grossing film in North America released in 2003, after the two second place finishes for its predecessors.

It could get a little boost from the Academy Awards if it wins best picture but it won't be much since its audience has seen it; it just might put it at the high side of my estimate.
