Think of how cool an eagle with the one ring would be. He would be inivisible and kill lots of dudes. he could probably even kill Batman.

. The Valar no longer concerned themselves with the events of Middle-earth, but still loved the people so they decided to send the 5 wizards to ME to help spur people on to fight for themselves. They were to be glorified motivational speakers. Only Gandalf was faithful to the cause and when he was killed, Eru sent him back with enhanced powers to help men finally defeat Sauron once and for all. These powers were an enhanced ability to spur men on (look at what he did to King Theoden) and also he was the lead strategist against Sauron in the War of the Ring. Before his ascension to "White" he might not have taken charge like he did.

It's been quite a while since I read the Silmarillion so if someone could refresh my memory: Radagast the Brown was good, but he was mostly neutral, more interested in animals/plants IIRC. I think he shows up or is at least mentioned in the Fellowship as well. Saruman the White, Gandalf the Gray....who were the other two?

The order of Wizards, the Maiar who came to Middle-earth after the first millennium of the Third Age. Of these, five came to the northwestern regions; Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast, Alatar and Pallando.

Alatar and Pallando arrived in Middle-earth dressed in sea-blue. For this reason, they were together given the name Ithryn Luin, the Blue Wizards. With Saruman, they journeyed into the far east of Middle-earth, but while Saruman returned to the west, Alatar and Pallando did not. Of their fate, we know almost nothing3.

Tolkien tells us 'What success they [Alatar and Pallando] had I do not know; but I fear they failed, as Saruman did, though doubtless in different ways; and I suspect they were the founders or beginners of secret cults and 'magic' traditions that outlasted the fall of Sauron.' (The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, No. 211).
