So, maybe you cried...
 

...and you're unafraid to admit it. -ptth- Thread inspired by listening to Annie Lennox's "Into The West" and thinking back to the film.

OK, it is extremely rare for me to have the waterworks going at a feature film. Probably happened less than 5-6 times.

And I would have actually shed more had I not been so stunned by what I was watching in ROTK...but the first viewing was like having one iron fist around my heart and another around my solar plexus. Perhaps more boo-hooing is in store for the future shows.

I did get really choked up at that brilliant scene where Frodo tells Sam to go away, that he can't do anything for him anymore. The way that was built up from Gollum's manipulation was brilliant. An adaptation and expansion from the books that impressed me right from the get-go.

But still, nothing in the film so far was really making me weep yet.

Then the image came...and it was so unexpected that I would begin full-on crying at that moment, because it was one of the things I was most nervous about seeing in the whole movie--how would Jackson et al. adapt this part?

The Eagles came, swooping down on the exploded Mt. Doom, Gandalf on Gwaihir's back...and when he so gently picked Frodo up in his talon and lifted him up...I was like a faucet. It was perfection, it was transcendent. I don't know what it was about that image, other than its evident beauty, that did this to me, but it was the hardest I have ever cried at a film.

Did any of the LOTR-viewing women of DVD Talk make their mascara run, or the men make themselves temporarily less macho? ;) Where in the movie did it happen to you, and why?

My next show of ROTK will be with a date, and who knows what she'll think...hopefully we can share the hankie. :)

I find that the more often I would cry in a movie when on a date the less often I would get sex.

so my advice. no tears on a date.

actually I have never cried in a movie or at home watching a movie although I have been close once or twice.

Okay, i shed a couple tears, at these parts mostly:

the charge of the Rohirrim against the Orcs.

Theoden's death.

Frodo saying goodbye to the other Hobbits.

so sad...:(

The bowing scene. That did it.

"My friends, you bow to no one."

yeah...theres some scenes...when Sam says "I can not carry the ring...but I can carry you" or something to that affect...boy that got me...and I swear my heart stopped when Aragorn says "For Frodo" and they all charge against what seems like millions of Orcs...god that got me!

My tear up moments in ROTK:

Aragorn..."For Frodo"

Faramir telling Gandalf he saw Sam and Frodo

King Theoden's death... I like Theoden/Bernard Hill

Aragorn..."you bow to no one"

Elrond telling Aragorn to take his rightfull place and giving him the reforged sword of his Fathers.

Frodo leaving on the ship

Frodo waking up in Rivendell


Here's one that I'm sure no one else teared up for:

the end credits when Boromir/Sean Bean came on screen,

Sam's "I may not be able to carry the ring, but I can carry YOU!"

"You bow to no one..."


and of course "We will see the shire again..." --- oh wait, I can't cry to that until the EE.

The bowing scene, the scene on the rock when they're surrounded by the lava and Sam talks about Rosie, and the parting scene got to me the most.

I got really teary eyed when Denethor tells Faramir that he wishes it was him that had died instead of Boromir. The look in his eyes just broke my heart, and the line that he spoke just before he left, "Father, if I return, I hope you will think better of me" just sealed it for me.

That and my favorite, "You bow to noone"

All hail to Peter jackson......... If anyone hasnt seen the movie...... see it.... You wont regret it. The Best Film of The Year....

I was about to tear up when Merry and Pippin had to say goodbye to one another as Pip headed to Gondor.

"That only counts as ONE!"

This scene was the only one where I started to shed some tears. I couldn't believe that everyone bowed to the Hobbits.

I tend to tear a lil durin' feel good stories like Radio and stuff like that.

Never cried in the movies.

there were so many, I can't remember em all... but here's a short list...

Theoden hitting the spears with his sword, and then rohan charging in.

Theoden talking to Eowyn as he's dying

aragorn hopping off the ship

aragorn "for frodo" and "you bow to no one"

Pippin pulling Faramir off the burning thingy

Frodo telling sam to go home. Sam carrying Frodo. Sam talking about rosie.

And at the very end when Frodo had to leave on the boat.

All of those were just "teary eyed" except the you bow to no one part where I was on the verge of sobbing like a baby.

The biggest tear jerking moments were:

For Frodo

You Bow to No one

Theoden's death

When Pippin & Merry were seperated

When Frodo has to say goodbye to Sam, Merry & Pippin

When Arwen shows up at the end of the film and kisses Aragorn

Theoden's "Braveheart" moment marshalling the troops and striking their spears with his sword.

This film is all about the kleenex.

I teared up a bit towards the end when there was the ceremony to King Aragorn.

That was very inspiring! Him touching swords like that said so much about him as a KING.

Shit, I felt like charging the Orcs myself after his speech and that cool method of connecting with his warriors :up:

When Arwen shows up at the end of the film and kisses Aragorn.

Seeing it again, I had a few more moments. Two involved Galadriel.

When she picks Frodo up from his fall, and when she smiles in bemusement over Bilbo's tenacity at the end.

The reunion of the fellowship, specifically when Aragorn walks in.

Sam marrying Rosie.

Sam's daughter running out to greet him.

Oh, and this may be somewhat off topic, but I hated Into The West. I thought May It Be, while not one of my favorite songs by a long shot, worked well enough for Fellowship. But I thought Into The West had a bad melody, and didn't work with Return of the King at all. Not to mention that I've never liked anything Annie Lennox did after the Eurythmics, that's certainly part of it. But, in general, the song felt very anti-climactic as the ending for the trilogy. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I would have preferred a different artist (perhaps David Bowie, or, if they wanted another female singer, Kate Bush), or just the score.

Oh hell, much of the whole second half of the movie had me teary.

Personally, I've really gotten to love "Into The West." I've been playing the soundtrack a lot (possibly the best one yet, by the way) and because of its association with the movie now it can choke me up.

Lennox was a good choice because she has more 'brawn' than the breathy Enya for FOTR; Torrini's "Gollum Song" for TTT was meant to be creepy and sad by contrast. I thought they both did well but didn't quite nail it--Enya is too delicate and the melody is too repetitive, Torrini too mopey, although both songs are decent.

Lennox makes a very good contrast to them and there's a good mix of the melancholy and the happy in the tune, which is the mood they wanted to capture for the end of the saga. :thumbsup:
