Titanic makes my list.

Matrix was just OK.

Gladiator. One of the few blind DVD buys. Put me to sleep.

Wish I had an hour. I could name many movies that could fit the bill.

The Godfather
Casablanca
North by Northwest
Pulp Fiction
Unforgiven
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Empire Strikes Back
Saving Private Ryan
It's a Wonderful Life
Braveheart

These are atop my list of favorite movies. Just because you liked LOA and I didn't doesn't make you right.

I have watched all of the films that I listed as overrated. I did not enjoy them. Here they are again if someone wants to dispute my opinion.

Lawrence of Arabia
Citizen Kane
Raging Bull

Oh yeah, I will add one more that I watched this weekend...

Midnight Cowboy (didn't enjoy it)

chente 12-08-03 01:20 PM

Forest Gump
Shakespeare in Love
Titanic
The English Patient

I agree with you on 'Shakepeare in Love'!

IMHO, 'Saving Private Ryan' should have won Best picture over it!!

Gamblor187 12-08-03 02:39 PM

Anything directed by Ridley Scott or Michael Mann

ToddSm66 12-08-03 03:02 PM

Memento
The Shawshank Redemption
The Usual Suspects
American Beauty
The Silence of the Lambs
Midnight Cowboy
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
Taxi Driver
Scarface
Forrest Gump
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Annie Hall

Not that I neccessarily dislike all of these movies - but I do think they are grossly overrated. For example - looking at the IMDB rankings, The Shawshank Redemption is ranked #2. Sure, it's a good movie and all - but #2 all-time? Hardly.

Eventhough I absolutely love these movies, I do find that the Star Wars movies with their popularity is a bit overrated

The LoTR movies and the Matrix movies are also a bit overrated.

Pains me to say so tho, because I enjoyed all these movies a lot.

TREX1993 12-08-03 11:29 PM

Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore just didn't live up to all the glorious reviews, IMO.

agree on that list

also Kevin Smith's movies... i dunno i just couldn't take his jokes very well...

Deftones 12-09-03 12:21 AM

The Godfather movies. They are good, but not great.

HistoryProf 12-09-03 01:42 AM

Chicago - perhaps the most overrated movie of all time.

A few others that come to mind....

Vertigo
Punch Drunk Love
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Moulin Rouge
Gladiator
Rebecca

huh? 12-09-03 03:04 AM

Matrix 2 and 3.

xDareDevilx 12-09-03 08:10 AM

thought of 2 more

the goonies
ferris beuhler's day off

(good movies, just not deserving of the hype they get for being "classics")

I agree about Punch Drunk Love. I love PTA's movies, but this one stunk. The critics still loved it though.

metaridley 12-09-03 01:04 PM

I would say Lord of the Rings 1 and 2, but then again, some people's heads would collectively explode with the mere thought of the LOTR films not being all they're hyped up to be. No word yet on if ROTK will live up to the hype, obviously.

Who the hell do you know that over-rates Matrix 2 and 3? Lots of people rate them pretty low, and nobody I know says they're two of the best movies ever, even the Matrix fans. Yes, they were over-hyped, but I think only a handful of people on this planet over-rate them.

mee2 12-09-03 01:48 PM

I can't think of a list of films right now, so i'll just have to mention ones i've seen recently:

Kill Bill
Royal Tenembaums
Spiderman

FRwL 03-17-06 05:06 PM

Big Lebowski- witty remarks and constant cursing makes a good movie not.
Fight Club- A 2 hour long film about corporation bitching gets tiresome as does the angsty moaning about how we haven't evolved from primordial sludge.
Pulp Fiction- Enjoyable to watch, but definitely not as much praise as it deserves.

MASAMUNE2 03-17-06 06:39 PM

Casablanca

grem458 03-17-06 10:51 PM

Lost in Translation (more than any other movie I can think of)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Gladiator
Monster's Ball
Panic Room
Suspiria
THX 1138
American Psycho

Shazam 03-18-06 01:06 AM

Holy thread resurrection!

Citizen Kane is generally touted as great simply because of all its technical accomplishments. For instance, Wells pretty much invented the tracking shot.

My list:

SEVEN SAMURAI
HORROR OF DRACULA (I prefer CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Seriously overpraised)
THE BIG SLEEP (I love Bogart, he's my favorite actor of all-time, but in this one, he might as well be [badjoke]Humphrey BORE-gart[/badjoke])
PSYCHO
THE GODFATHER (Part II is MUCH better)
DR. ZHIVAGO (Overlong costume drama. Hated it)
ALL ABOUT EVE
MY FAIR LADY
THE GRADUATE
THE EXORCIST
FIGHT CLUB
THE MATRIX
LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS
SOME LIKE IT HOT (I love Billy Wilder. ONE TWO THREE, SUSNET BOULEVARD, and DOUBLE INDEMNITY are all great, but I didn't like this at all)
ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (I prefer DePalma's PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE)
DUCK SOUP (I love The Marx Brothers, but I didn't care for this one)
SCARFACE (Remake)
STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE
JAWS

Please don't bash me for my opinions. That's all I am, another opinion. Don't like it? No problem. But lets not start a flame war over this.

LOTR and all the Harry Potter films.
