The official Return of the King anticipation thread (56k beware)

In only three weeks, Peter Jackson's epic masterpiece will be completed, and we will finally get to witness what is sure to be the best of the three films, and probably the single greatest fantasy film ever made. I know there are a few other ROTK threads, but I thought we should have one devoted especially to the sheer excitement and anticipation we LOTR fans are feeling right now. Hopefully this thread will suffice until the eventual ROTK subforum takes shape.

-Do you think ROTK will live up to the standards of the previous two films?

-How many times are you going to see it in the theater?

-What scene(s) are you most looking forward to?

Also include discussion of the changes and alterations from the book (both confirmed and rumored), and your opinions of them.

I hadn't seen the Army of Dead pic. Nice.

I give it six months before The Hobbit is greenlighted.

Man, make that three cups filled...

Most part III's blow chunks. Let's hope this one doesn't follow that pattern.

After Jackson's (and Boyen's and Walsh's etc..) handling of the more difficult first two movies, I fully trust their instinct in handling the much more linear third movie. This is going to kick ass.

Wow!!

What a way to bring in the Holidays.

It's gonna be summer of 2004 before it's gonna be released in Japan.Time to take a flight to New York or New Zealand for this movie

I love all the posters, except for the very first one. I don't like the painted look it has. Viggo looks really cartoonish to me.
I can't wait for this, I am skipping work to watch it.

This looks fantastic.

What else to say.

Hurry up Dec 17

I try not to get my hopes up when it comes to sequels, and even then I still get let down a lot, but I cannot help myself this time. I can almost taste the anticipation ...

Are they even done shooting/editing it? The premiere is still five days away... ;)
It seemed as recently as a couple of weeks ago that they were way behind schedule, which does not bode well. Still, it should be a great film.

I am very much looking forward to see how they are going to bypass the Scouring of the Shire and explain Saruman's fate.

das: With LotR of course, it's best to think of them as one story, and not sequels. I completely believe the cast and crew when they say it's definitely the best of the three. I can't wait. Luckily, I have the wonderful soundtrack to tide me over.

And that pic of Aragorn with the ghost army is sweet!

If the premiere is in five days, one can only assume shooting and editing are completed.

About the scouring, my guess is that it will simply be ignored. I bet the hobbits will return to the shire and everything will be as it was before. As for Saruman's fate,
Spoiler:
what will probably happen is we will have to make some assumptions based on quick comments by the characters ("Now that Saruman is defeated..." or something to that effect), and we won't really get to see his demise in detail until the EE, where it is rumored that he will be pushed out of Orthanc (possibly by Grima) and be impaled on spikes.

Oh, I know. I was using the term loosely, like when the third part of a television mini-series is a letdown. You don't need to be a reactionary "sequel" to let me down. :) Still, I have complete faith in this one. I know it's dangerous for me to be so pumped about it, but I can't help myself. :D

I'm so ready for this film

bdshort 11-26-03 09:21 PM

The first academy screenings are tomorrow, the 27th. And the Newsweek guy has seen it twice already. I would hope it's done ;)

The LA premier is on Dec 3rd and the Washington DC premier is on the 4th, when's the New York City premier?

If I'm correct, it should be released approximately 1 month after the U.S. release date. At least, that was the case for the Two Towers. Damn, I can't wait. Meanwhile, Harry "make money off dem kids" Potter gets the same release date as the U.S.. Go figure.

Kumar J 11-26-03 11:13 PM

Japan has been delaying the release for LOTR ,even Two Towers came out 5 months after the release in U.S. I saw it in Indonesia and after 4 months later it came to Tokyo. If they do it like the Matrix or X-Men 2 then I am very happy :)

Pauly 11-27-03 02:23 AM

jesus, talk about almost ruining a film before it even opens. I dont know why New Line would let any mag publish pictures of the fallen Gondorian soldiers and the one where Eowyn faces the Witch King. The latter is one of the major key scenes, youd think theyd want to leave it a surprise for those unfamiliar with the story. Stupid.

dstrauss 11-27-03 03:55 PM

BTW, tickets are on sale for the 12:01 am shows opening night at movietickets.com. I picked up 10 for me and a few friends for the Pleasure Island 24 at Disney.

I am *very* psyched for this.
