Someone from Tolkienonline.com has seen the film, and is doing a Q&A. The thread is here: http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhit...hreadid=74209.

Obviously, that thread includes massive spoilers. Here are some of the main points:

Spoiler:
1. Gandalf vs. Witch King at the Gates of Minas Tirith will NOT be in the film.
2. The Mouth of Sauron is NOT in the film.
3. The last line of the film is Sam arriving home and saying "Well, I'm back."
4. The Grey Havens scene is exactly like it was in the book.
5. Eowyn vs. Witch King is highly faithful to the book.
6. Possibly the most major change is that Gollum turns Frodo against Sam and Frodo sends Sam home, leaving Frodo to face Shelob alone.
7. Denethor does not have a Palantir.
8. Aragorn does not fight Sauron, nor is Sauron shown in any other form than the Great Eye.
9. The destruction of Barad-dûr is shown.
10. Faramir is more like the book Faramir than he was in The Two Towers.
11. The Eagles are in the movie.

EDIT: The spoiler info has been submitted to theonering.net, and has been organized and listed. http://www.theonering.net/perl/newsview/8/1070004377

Moriarty from AICN just got back from the screening he was at. Here are the highlights (no spoilers) - taken from AICN IRC Chat, dunno when he'll have a write up available.:

It's amazing. It's better than you think it's going to be.
It is astonishing. There's a stretch in the middle where PJ hits an emotional crescendo that lasts almost an hour and a half... I don't think I've ever been so worked up in a movie. I didn't know if I should stay seated or jump up or what. It's preposterously great.
Take all the emotional power of the first film... and double it.
Take the battle intensity of the second one... and double it.
Then put them together.
I talked to three people at the DGA afterwards... all three are voting Academy members, and all three are guys who are part of major voting blocks. They all said the same thing: "There is no competition for that. There can't be."
And the crowd... a fairly blase industry crowd... went nuts. They applauded at least eight different scenes.
Can't wait to see this. I know AICN people can get over excited about things, but I don't care if he is or not in this case. :D

Good God. Is there any possible, conceivable way this movie could ever live up to the expectations I am building up for myself? There couldn't be.

But if it does... oh boy.

PalmerJoss 11-28-03 06:56 AM

I've been looking forward to this for the past 3 years, and then some. Ever since I read the books many years ago I had hoped to see a good adaptation onscreen, and Peter Jackson has fully exceeded my expectations. I can't wait for Trilogy Tuesday so that I can see these masterpieces all as one long movie as PJ intended it to be seen one day.

QuiGonJosh 11-28-03 08:30 AM

Damn it...no Mouth of Sauron...oh well...it'll be in the EE...they filmed it...

FiveO 11-28-03 08:47 AM

Can....not....wait.....

Almost there...only eighteen more days...

Well, unfortunately, you WON'T see it all, as the ROTK version you see will be the "cut" theatrical version, while the first two will be what PJ intended.

Jackson has stated numerous times that the extended editions are not director's cuts, or his "preferred" version.

It's semantic, ok, fine, they are "EXTENDED EDITIONS". The fact remains that these extended editions exist because PJ has been asked to turn in approximately 3 hour length movies for theatrical release.

The fact that the EE's are about 3:30 and 3:43 (and ROTK - almost 4?) SUGGESTS that there MIGHT be scenes which were intended to exist that didn't make the theatrical cut simply due to the time constraints.

So, again, to see the "ONE LONG MOVIE" (which WAS the quote I was responding to) won't happen next month. What IS happening is mixing the two genres - two EEs with one theatrical cut.

Either show the THREE theatrical cuts together, or show the THREE EEs together. Otherwise, you are NOT seeing a cohesive whole.

I never thought of myself as a raving fanboy before... but PJ now has one devoted fan. I can not wait for this movie!

i feel the same way. the next 18 days will be very slow.

Jalizarin 11-29-03 05:19 AM

ever since the first one took my breath away, i've been on pins and needles to see the next two as they came out...my husband, who is as big a fan as i, has spent the last 6 months overseas. he will be home, barring no huge changes between now and then, between dec 18th and the 22nd! :) i'll wait to watch it with him, probably just after christmas.

two reasons to be excited about mid-december!! :D

I do somewhat agree with you, but while listening to Peter Jackson's commentary track on TTT:EE he mentions that if you have seen the Extended versions of FOTR and TTT it will make your understanding of ROTK that much better. I think the movies will flow together just fine, so I have no problem with the mixing of the theatrical and extended cuts.

I would prefer to see all 3 Extended Editions together, but I had been told that it probably won't happen for quite a while, if at all. Just doing the very limited Trilogy Tuesday is apparently costing New Line a bit, and they won't make much money off of it, if any.

If they did more of the long showings other than 1 day...they might make some dough.

I can understand that by leaving the 13 hour marathon in the theatre only for 1 day....they're probably losing some cash.

Considering how much they made on the series...I'm not too worried.

In regards to one the spoilers, I had noted that
Spoiler:
Bruce Spence (Mouth of Sauron) was not listed in the IMDB 'cast list' which I felt was rather odd, since he had been in the past.

Dr. DVD 11-29-03 11:40 AM

While the video game is great,
Spoiler:
I am glad Aragorn doesn't engage the Mouth of Sauron in combat, that would really demean the dark lord's presence IMO. However, I wanted to see Bruce Spence again.
:(

My theory: IMDB only lists those actors who appear in the theatrical version. IMDB probably dropped him from the list only after it was decided he wouldn't be in the TE.

But don't worry. We'll see him in all his glory in the EE.

Here's the thing that put my mind at ease about this. All three movies were shot simultaneously, so the filmmakers would all have to decide every third day or so to suck in order to ruin one of them. I would guess if you liked the first two, the third will deliver more of the same. It's a great way to produce a trilogy, that's for sure.

I don't see the films as sequels, but as a saga, they are connected, sequel wording is given bad taste, even when a sequel is brilliant and better, it still this bible thing that the original is something sacred, thats all rubbish. :D

That rottentomatoes.com viewer referred to giant orcs with catapults. Silly person! Didn't know they were actually Cave Trolls! A true sign of ignorance, even if it is a good review.
