Groundhog Day, or Man Who Knew Too Little. Bill Murray always makes me laugh.

One of my all-time favorite comedies: Planes, Trains, & Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin.

For "stupid" comedy: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

I've always been a big fan of The Princess Bride.

Personally, I'm a big fan of comedies. Here are some others that I like:

The Big Lebowski
My Cousin Vinny
Swingers
Three Amigos
What About Bob?
Being John Malkovich
Tommy Boy

Stripes, Rushmore, ...

some edits after thought
So I Married an Axe Murder, Maverick, Fletch, Caddyshack, Trading Places, Ghost Busters, Notting Hill (well, it's a comedy-romance, but very funny)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (well, partly comedy; the DVD is pretty good!)

I'm a big fan of the old "screwball comedy" like Bringing Up Baby (sadly not available on DVD), Arsenic and Old Lace, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (the original!), etc. But I'm sure they're not to everyone's taste.

For silly physical comedy, The Party (w. Peter Sellers) is pretty good.

If you want something more high-faluting, the Branagh version of Much Ado About Nothing is great.

Big
High Fidelity
In & Out
Soapdish
Bridget Jones's Diary

Not purely comedy, but it works for me. And if your wife is into cartoons, I always recommend The Emperor's New Groove for a hilarious laughter.

I assume you've watched your Sunday film already, but the Marx Brothers film A Night at the Opera is one of my all time faves.

Oh . . . that's just wrong, Hendrik . . .

My picks . . . I'm always a big fan of The Princess Bride . . .

What About Bob? is a classic Bill Murray . . .

Happy Gilmore for a goofy, but funny Adam Sandler film . . .

Monty Python And The Holy Grail for a dose of the British "Python Experience" . . .

My Cousin Vinny for a good comedic "North vs. South" clash . . .

The Three Amigos is classic Original SNL style humor (how can you miss with C. Chase, S. Martin, AND M. Short?) . . .

. . . and, one of the most under appreciated comedy films of all times . . . My Blue Heaven

What? No mention of Blazing Saddles or The Life of Brian?
And Monty Python and the Holy Grail is anything but "stupid", or low-brow. In fact an Oxford education would help one understand some of their bantering. Just listen to Dennis the Peasant. If you want stupid try Road Trip.

For screwball comedy you can't beat the classics like the Marx Brothers (Duck Soup, Animal Crackers, Horse Feathers, Night at the Opera) or The Thin Man or The Philadephia Story.

For sports comedy you have Bull Durham and Slap Shot.

I forgot to mention the best 'dark' comedy: Dr. Strangelove ...

Comedy is a broad genre. Can you narrow your preferences down?

I'm sure this will duplicate many above, but here's my short list of favorite comedies:

The Producers (maybe my favorite comedy of all time, and definitely by favorite Brooks film).

Life of Brian (Holy Grail was my favorite as a kid, but as I get older I find this one much more subtly hilarious.)

Chris Guest docuflicks: Waiting For Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind

This is Spinal Tap

A Shot in the Dark (far and away my favorite of the Pink Panther flicks)

Duck Soup

Dr. Strangelove

Blues Brothers (amazing soundtrack helps this one a lot)

I called it "stupid" because it is so outrageous. It's one of my favorite movies.

Ah, what we have here is a failure to communicate. Must be a generational thing. I'm old enough to have seen it in the theater when it was released (and I did too!) Just like Up in Smoke, I had to sit through a number of viewings to catch most of it. I was laughing to much and so hard I was in pain afterwards.

A comedy with meaning...

Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life", of course.
