What Happened to Hidalgo?

One movie besides Matrix Revolutions, Last Samurai and ROTK that I've been anticipating all year is Hidalgo and I remember from the trailer that it was supposed to be released in Novemeber, now we're halfway through the month and I haven't seen any advertising for it, what the dilly?

the big train 11-14-03 11:34 PM

That would be Spring 2004

jaeufraser 11-14-03 11:38 PM

Yeah it's scheduled for march.

funkyryno 11-15-03 03:14 AM

I saw a new trailer for it tonight before Master and Commander. Looks pretty good.

Dr. DVD 11-15-03 08:34 AM

I think they thought it needed some retooling. Can't say I blame them, the preview left me underwhelmed.

Samuel 11-15-03 10:27 AM

That stinks, I could have sworn the trailer said "This Thanksgiving". Oh well, maybe two movies with Viggo Mortensen so close together is too much of risk?

Geofferson 11-15-03 10:28 AM

Just saw the trailer last night before MandC. Springtime

Goldberg74 11-15-03 03:00 PM

Even when I saw the trailer before LXG earlier in the summer, it said March 2004.

Actually according to Variety it is the exact opposite. Execs were extremely impressed with the early prints of the movie & feel it can compete with the big movies of the early summer season & really help establish Vigo as a leading man.

Michael Corvin 11-15-03 04:34 PM

I think it also had to do with distancing it from Seabiscuit. They didn't want 2 horse movies out around the same time. Much like prior movies, asteroid flicks, volcano flicks etc. one of them always fails. And with SB getting oscar buzz they didn't want to be "that other horse" move.

Me, too.

fumanstan 11-16-03 02:35 AM

I hope the new trailer is a lot better then the old one, because that one stunk :)

javanut 11-18-03 03:25 PM

The new trailer was tons better. Made the film look like a very good, Indiana Jones-esque adventure.

BUMP.

Questioned answered, here comes Hidalgo on March 5th.

Here's the new info on Coming Soon.

Giles 02-13-04 04:15 PM

saw a sneak for it, and its okay just not great, the film tries to be too many things all at once. The pirnt was also crappy, the mono sound didn't help either.

Pants 02-13-04 05:26 PM

Wasn't excitted for this untill I found out that Joe Johnston is directing. Now I'm there.

Tarnower 02-14-04 08:32 AM

I hope not, but it looks like all the big action set pieces have already been revealed in the trailer. Maybe all these irritating people who constantly walk into theaters just as the main feature begins are onto something........purposefully skipping the preview trailers.

I didn't realize that either until you posted it.

I'm really looking forward to Hidalgo, finally it's almost here. I don't know why they moved it away from Seabiscuit... they seem like 2 totally different stories. I agree with you, javanut. It reminds me of an Indiana Jones adventure.

The release change was not so much to distance Hidalgo from Seabiscuit as it was to wait until after LOTR:ROTK to parlay the name recognition of Viggo.

alloy2 02-23-04 02:49 PM

Oh yeah, I guess that would make sense. I thought that it was odd that they would move it just because of Seabiscuit. I just saw the trailer again with the sandstorm chasing Viggo... those effects look awesome. Reminded me of the Mummy a little bit.

javanut 03-01-04 02:10 PM

I hope this does well this weekend. It's going to be competitive, between the release of ROTK, Starsky & Hutch, and The Passion . . .

Jackskeleton 03-01-04 02:31 PM

I don't see it going over so well for some reason. It comes out this week and it's not nearly getting the same level of attention as Starsky and Hutch or Passions. If any film can beat Passions this week it will be Starsky and Hutch.
