LONG , drawn out ,slow movie with a weak payoff ending. The sound effects of the ocean were cool tho. Seems as if the movie was trying to make you care for the people that died, before they died. Many people around me slept during the flick , and few walked out. This is a Rental.

Hmm, critics are loving it. Just what I wanted. A film aimed at someone over the age of 21.

Ebert gave it 4 stars? Must be a surefire dud.
I find it sad that we live in a society where a movie's action must be constant slam-bang from start to finish. Kill Bill is doing modestly, and I think it's the best action movie of the year.
M & C looks like it might actually have some story to back up its action, and the critics are liking it. Anything wrong with that?

the Washington Post reviews haven't been all that kind, saying that it is not faithful to the two books, there is too much story compressed into two hours and twenty minutes, and that the finale battle sequence is nowhere as intense as the opening sea battle.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I've read all the books. If the final battle sequence is the one I'm thinking of, it's supposed to be tense and suspenseful, not violent and in-your-face. It's one of the best moments in the books.

The movie's now at 89% on RottenTomatoes, by the way.

I just saw it last night, and the first battle pales in comparison to the final battle. Overall, after stewing over the movie for a day I will easily see this again. The character development is well done, and the footage on the sea is amazing. Double to the sound as well... very moody.

A major battle at the beginning that dwarfs the others in the movie, sounds like Gladiator to me!

Seriously though, this might be a movie that clicks with critics but not with a majority of audiences. Most PG-13 crowd members will find this way too slow for their tastes. Then again, Peter Weir has a knack for substance over style, so you never know. Audiences flocked to Truman show despite not having Jim Carrey act like a total doofus all the time.

I have been eagerly anticipating this flick for months and the positive feedback I keep hearing/reading is building up my anticipation even more.

That's the best way to be letdown.

I just got back from seeing this and was impressed. It wasn't quite what I tought it'd turn out to be, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The character development was key - and the main reason I enjoyed it as much as I did. I can where people can call it "slow" at times, but the 2 hours and 20 minutes flew by when I was watching it. ***/**** stars

I give this movie a big

Quite possibly the best nautical adventure movie ever. I sure as hell wasn't bored during this movie, but then again, I don't need an explosion every five minutes to keep me interested.

Can't wait until it comes out on DVD so my home theater can give it the audio treatment it deserves.


Edit to add: The only thing that bugged me was the appearance of the anti-piracy dots in the middle of the movie during an intense scene. Normally, they wouldn't have bothered me, but the popped up in scenes that were very monochromatic, the red dots just jumped out of the white sails.

Saw it. I thought it was great and give it a big . However, I have quite a beef with the marketing dept. for this flick. They tried to sell it as a high seas adventure/Gladiator on water, when in reality it was an in depth look at life on the sea and the challenges facing a leader. Very typical movie for Peter Weir, and I knew to more or less expect such going into it.
Problem is: I could tell a lot of the audience wanted more action and wasn't prepared for what it got. As a result, I fear they will give it negative word of mouth. Not that I blame them, they weren't sold what they were promised. I really do wish they had been more truthful with their advertising for this movie.

I thought it was real good. The 2 hours 20 minutes did go by fast while watching it. The opening scene was pretty intense too. One of the Hobbits, I think Merry or Pippen, was in the movie too, and that sort of distracted me cuz thats still how I saw the guy.

I haven't read the source material, but I'm a huge fan of the Horatio Hornblower books by Forester which appears to be very similar in subject and tone. Gonna have to convince the wife we need to go see it now.

The movie itself was very enjoyable. Like previous posters have stated, the trailer did try to sell it as a high seas action movie and having never read the books, that is what I expected going in. It was slower than I expected it to be, but that is not a bad thing int his case. The studio should have marketed the film for what it really is instead of trying to make a quick buck off of "Pirates of the Carribbean's" success.
