Question about Kill Bill spinoff flicks...

Hi. I'd like to get your opinions on the following films...

Lady Snowblood

The Bride who wore Black

That Swedish film "They Call Her One Eye" (aka: "Thriller")

Ichi The killer

Out of all these films, Which one would be RIGHT up my alley, especially for a nice bloodfest/gore/Kill Bill nut like me? Which one stays closer to the Kill Bill(revenge) theme? Are all of them martial arts films?

Are all these titles available on dvd?

They're not spinoffs. They're films that have been around a lot longer than Kill Bill that Quentin referenced.

Ichi will make it's region 1 debut next month, so be on the lookout for that (Said to be FULLY uncut) and I heard that One-Eye is on the way as well.

If you want gory, old school samurai action, look no further than the 2 episodes of Lone Wolf & Cub-Sword of Vengeance & Baby Cart to Hades. Sonny Chiba's The Streetfighter is another must-see and for more over-the-top Kung Fu bloody mayhem, you can't go wrong with The Story of Ricky.

Though not as violent, be sure to check out some of these other flicks that carry the Kill Bill spirit:

Five Fingers of Death
Death Rides a Horse
Master of the Flying Guillotine
Game of Death (Or more perferably, Bruce Lee:A Warrior's Journey The more action in the track suit, the better!)

Just watched Ninja Scroll (the anime inspiration for Kill Bill) and it was excellant, but not for kiddies.

I found Battle Royale on ebay, it should be here in about a week.

They Call her One Eye has the strongest revenge theme (special edition DVD is in the making). Ichi The Killer has the most over the top blood and gore (get the Dutch R2 disc or wait for the forthcoming R1 disc). Lady Snowblood is just a great film that you should see regardless (hopefully Animeigo will release a nice DVD of this soon!). I've never seen The Bride Who Wore Black.

I own pretty much all of these already. But thanks for looking out. 5 Fingers was actually one of the first Martial Arts films I ever saw. Came on "On TV"(remember that?) when i was a kid.

I am certainly glad to hear Ichi is coimng out on R1 uncut...looking forward to that. I haven't seen Shogun Assassin (aka Lone Wolf and Cub) in a long time. What is the best version to get? At HKFlix.com they have a crapload of different versions, but I didn't see Animeigo's version listed. Has anyone seen the Animeigo version? How many episodes of LWaC does the Shogun assassin movie edit together?

I'm looking forward to buying Lady snowblood and One Eye...those sound fantastic.

I wonder if QT ever saw Story of Ricki....

Oh by the way did I mention I met Sonny Chiba 10 years ago? I used to work at a high rise condo he stayed at and would see him often. A nice guy through and through.

I suppose the typical blood gushing which was inspired by films like Lone wolf and cub. the wondering samuari theme? Plenty of stuff that has been around in other films not introduced in ninja scroll.

Shogun Assassin is made up of around 12 minutes of the first Lone Wolf and Cub film, and most of the second one. Usually I hate dubbed and edited foreign films, of course, but this one is pretty decent, and was the introduction to those films to most people in the US.

You got to meet Sonny Chiba a bunch of times? Shit, I'm jealous.

The blood gushing during the anime part of KB is exactly the same as seen in Ninja Scroll.

Even though this closeup shot wasn't used in the final cut, there were shades of the Jubei/Utsutsu duel seen here.

Yeah, good point. I thought of that scene from Ninja Scroll when I saw this as well. I remember thinking "Hmmm, this looks familiar", then it hit me.

and a hundred other anime series. those series take that inspiration from the older films. So it isn't directly from Ninja scroll.

But Valenti probably isn't as concerned about that film. The Japanese companies that produced Ichi aren't members of the MPAA.

Yeah, but I'm sure once buena vista picks it up and has a field day with it, they will start caring.
