POTC hits $300mil

Whould've thunk it at the beginning of the year? It almost made more than T3, Charlie's Angels 2 and Tomb Raider 2 COMBINED!

This is not including the more profits Finding Nemo might make when it's released here in Japan this December

I think those are all box office receipts for U.S. only. Finding Nemo has made $430 million already when you include worldwide gross.

The biggest surprise was that POTC beat Matrix:Reloaded. I certainly did not expect that.

It doesn't mean a thing. The only thing that's certain will be Disney releasing straight to home video sequel of Finding Nimo and POTC w/ all the main characters (including voice) replaced by some no name, hoping to cash in on the children. Mean while Matrix Reloaded will have an official follow-up titled Revolution.

Actually, POTC has a sequel greenlit with Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski attached again. While it remains to be seen if it will be good, it won't be some low-rent direct to video sequel.

Bear in mind that, counting worldwide grosses (there is, apparently, life outside of North America), Matrix Reloaded is still the #1 hit of the summer (roughly $740 million).

However, as previously mentioned, Nemo has yet to open in many key markets, and Pirates is still chugging along (if slowing down) overseas.

Nonetheless, POTC's grosses is a HUGE success for Disney. They were hoping for $150-$200 million style grosses on this film as a best bet, and it went beyond their expectations. Definitely a summer success story, although Nemo is still the top-grosser of the year.

Just wait til Nemo hits DVD. Fasting selling DVD ever.

POTC and Freaky Friday will do well also. Between these 3, I'd say at least 10 million DVDs sold by the end of the year.

and Pixar has yet to do a direct to video sequel (though Toy Story 2 was close).

Cool. Maybe they'll bump the DVD release up to a 4 disk special extended director’s platinum edition.

Sorry to bring up the Matrix again, but I was thinking that the Matrix was going to rule the summer. I'm no Matrix fanboy by any means. But I thought that the Matrix had a lot of good momentum. Well, in the end, I realized that rated R movies just won't beat a good PG or PG-13 movie. And I'm thinking that POTC also cut into T3, which was also a rated R movie. Even after Nemo beat Matrix, I thought Reloaded had a lock on the number 2 spot. Really, POTC came out of nowhere.

The reason POTC did so well was because it was an authentically good and fun movie everyone could enjoy. Also, it had a PG-13 rating to get kids who wanted to feel more mature hooked.
While somewhat hyped, it was never projected to make this much. It made its money the old fashioned way, through word of mouth, like any good film should. For that, I give it a congrats and

I think the $280 mil that Reloaded pulled in is really impressive, solely on the fact that it's an R-rated movie. I mean, come on, it took TWENTY years to beat the highest grossing R-rated film Beverly Hills Cop. And even BHC's $230mil gross is small in the big picture (#34 of all time). There are only four R-rated films in the Top50 grossers.
