I believe I just heard on Kevin & Bean this morning on KROQ 106.7 in Los Angeles, that Keith Richards has been signed to play Jack Sparrow's father and that they are filming 2 sequels simultaneously.

Yeah I've seen a few scattered internet reports about that, looks like it could be a great job of casting--if he can act. I'd say he could pull it off on personality alone, but either way I'm excited about this.

Any word on who might play Bootstrap Bill, assuming he's in the movie?

Let's hope this one gets a decent score and doesn't run as long as F'ing Apocalypse Now, then maybe all the hype will be warranted.

Man, I'm so sick of the "two sequels simultaneously" mindset.

Just make one movie and if it's good enough, make another.

Or better yet, don't make any and leave the original alone, as a very fun (if overlong) summer popcorn flick that didn't have much depth but made up for it in enjoyability.

Both sets of sequels were filmed simultaneously, with diminishing results. In fact, none of them were anywhere near as good as the originals. Some were out-and-out terrible.

I'll ignore Lord of the Rings, for obvious reasons altogether.

But the main reason they shoot them simultaneously is of course to save money, which I think is a great idea. Plus less chances of any of the stars dying and not being able to make the next sequel. ;)

Now quality wise, we have seen many sequels many years apart that stink up the place. In fact, MOST sequels suck big time. I would think that filming them together would keep the creative team together and hopefully bring out a better product.

But we shall see. Any idea when the first sequel is supposed to appear in the theaters? It doesn't look like it will make it until Nov 2005 at the earliest.

I'd say two examples aren't really enough of anything to be sick of, let alone constitute a mindset. I actually thought Back to the Future Part 2 was the best of the 3.

So it worked once, and then didn't work twice over the course of 15 years. That's not exactly enough evidence to say that this is some growing trend that destined to failure. Let's take a look at all the sequels that weren't filmed back-to-back and see how many of them sucked, and I'm sure you'd find a much worse success rate than 1 out of 3.

I would love to see Keef play Sparrow's dad. Also, I didn't know that his performance was partially based on Pepe LePew. :lol:

The sequels weren't filmed simultaneously. The entire story was really one film broken into thirds.

In the Matrix's case, you had one great film and, 4 years later, two simultaneously-shot sequels which, while I enjoyed them to varying degrees, were nowhere near as good as the original.

BTTF 2 was garbage, IMHO. Ambitious, but crap. 3 was OK, if not overly memorable.

My bottom line is that any and all attempts to film simultaneous sequels has inevitably resulted in an immediate and significant drop in quality. From excellent to OK, or in BTTF's case to awful.

All IMHO of course, but all the best sequels ever filmed (Godfather II, Empire, Toy Story 2, Spider-Man 2) were done as stand alone films, not part of some elongated and overwrought vision.

"It was mentioned in the European press the other day, well now it's confirmed. Stellan Skarsgard and Naomie Harris are boarding Walt Disney Pictures' back-to-back sequels to "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" says The Hollywood Reporter.

The sequels reunite all the main players in the 2003 blockbuster: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley star, Gore Verbinski directs, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio write and Jerry Bruckheimer produces. In the new films, Skarsgard will play Bloom's long-lost father, and Harris will play a gypsy queen.

"Pirates 2" is scheduled for a summer 2006 release. Shooting is to start in early March in Los Angeles and the Caribbean. Skarsgard and Bruckheimer previously worked together on "King Arthur". Harris is best known major roles in the Brit horror film "28 Days Later" and the recent Pierce Brosnan caper movie "After the Sunset"."

So, looks like we'll see bootstraps in the sequels.

No doubt. The first Pirates was a decent yarn but it was just too damn long for its own good.

I'd heard the Keith Richards rumor, but I don't know if it's confirmed or not.

Does Johnny Depp need money? :) I will wait for a preview before making a movie going decision.

The pictures spoil a scene in the follow-up movies, so only view them if you're willing to find out what may happen.

The first of the two sequels, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, will be released by Walt Disney Pictures the summer of 2006, with the untitled third film following the summer of 2007.

The production started filming the two movies on February 28th and the shoot is expected to finish in December.
