Okay.
Sherlock Holmes without his pipe
Rick Blaine without a cigarette
Little Caesar without a cigar
Butch without his Red Apples
The movie "Smoke" without any smoking
The scene in Godfather when Michael and Enzo(?) are outside the hospital, after the car leaves.

Sure, as Freud is reputed to have said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but in movies, as in plays, a cigar, cigarette, or pipe can be a plot device, something that reveals a character trait or mindset, or a prop to fiddle with.

I find it odd that someone could be offended by watching someone smoke on a movie screen. These are fictitious characters doing fictitious stuff. Are you bothered by passive cinematic smoke? When you go home, do your clothes reek of tobacco-tainted celluloid smell?

"My friends think it's gross and so do a lot of people I know."

How many friends are we talking about? How many people are a lot?

With Americans being killed in the Iraqi non-war, with an appallingly low literacy rate in the U.S. (let alone the rest of the world), with world hunger (let alone in the U.S.), rampant disease, massive human rights violations, your focus is smoking in movies?

If you object to smoking in movies, don't go to those that have smoking in them. That'll send a message to Hollywood.

Good luck in your crusade.

that's the silliest question I've heard in a long time.
