I still "diss" Rundown for it's poor opening & even less stellar take to date. And 22.2 is significantly better than the Rundown's opening total. Rundown was hyped as being the vehicle to truly mark the arrival of The Rock being the next big action star. It is a Pg-13 movie which clearly shows it's marketed for a much wider audience, it's a big budget action movie geared towards men in general with a Gen X star bringing in the younger crowd. Kill Bill is a movie really marketed towards a VERY small type of audience. Not only is it R rated, it's so R rated it will turn off even the average R rated audience. Kill Bill is made for a very specific type of movie goer, Tarantino himself has said it's not made to be a blockbuster (which Rundown was), it's made out of simple passion of a very obscure genre of film. Thus, I "diss" the Rundown's opening & am very happry with Kill Bill's intital take.

I wouldn't say KILL BILL was marketed for a niche market. the R rating and the profit was good, but kill bill has the same Male audiance target and fan basis that enjoyed QT's 3 other films which range from the popular Pulp Fiction to the less then desired Jackie Brown. in all, KILL BILL was marketed more then Rundown was. Rundown was made for a general blockbuster purpose, but the same rules apply with the both. though Yes, run down to a larger hit, it doesn't shout doom for "the rocks" career.

I would say that Kill Bill is being pushed much more than "The Rundown." I've seen a lot more trailers, and a lot of "Making Of" segments on the various entertainment shows.

Budget is also an important consideration: The Rundown had a budget of $85 million!

Edit: Doh, I see John Spartan beat me to it. Never mind.

Jackie Brown $39,673,162 overall

I hardly think that heavy TV and print advertising to promote a 3000 screen opening can be considered "marketing towards a very small type of audience"!

I wouldn't consider "Kill Bill" a date movie.

I haven't seen The Rundown, so I can only speculate.

QT is one of the most economical filmmakers working today. He boasts that he can make a $7 million movie look like it cost five times as much -- and he can.

Pulp Fiction had an $8 million budget, and while it proudly displays its indie "look and feel", the movie still looks like a major studio feature (having Willis, Travolta, Kietel, and Jackson working for scale certainly helped.)

The same can also be said for Jackie Brown, a slick-looking film (and still, IMHO, Taratino's best) that, with its $14 million budget, looks bigger and grander than it actually cost (again, the major principals took pay cuts for this movie, and I'm sure Grier didn't exactly demand millions, though she deserved it.)

I assume The Rock took a multi-million dollar paycheck for his film, whereas Thurman, although having been in some moderate sized hits, has a pretty spotty box-office record. That outrageously untalented ballsack from the American Pie films probably didn't come cheap either.
