Phantasm vs The Shining

I saw both of these right about the same time when I was like 7 or 8 and both of them have since become two of my favorite thrillers. Which out of these two classics do you personaly consider A)scarier b)more entertaining c)funnier or d)has stood the test of time better?

Well, it's been a few years since I've seen Phantasm, but I think the Shining is superior on all 4 counts, at least a,b and d. Phantasm may have an edge on humor, intentional and unintentional.

Both fine films in my book, but I have to give props to Phantasm. That one consistantly creeps me out when I watch it, while The Shining doesn't anymore. Both equally entertaining, but Shining just isn't scary anymore. Instead of finding it suspenseful, it's more like you're just watching Jack's degredation until he finally snaps.

Don't get me wrong, I love Phantasm, but these movies aren't in the same league. They're not even in the same game!

Shining.

The Shining. Phantasm really isn't that good, even though it has some interesting ideas behind it.

I agree with elias, I think The Shining is more of a suspence movie, where Phantasm is a horror/gore film. Both great, but not exactly the same genre.
About like the Pianist and The Dirty Dozen are both great War movies, but not really in the same genre.

The Shining sweeps the original Phantasm in every category you've listed. (Phantasm has better theme music, though.) The first Phantasm has some great ideas, but it's not a great film. I actually think the second film is far superior (and the third one is better than the first, but not as good as the second).

The Phantasm was a great "indie" film of sorts, but as far as holding up, casting and story, Kubrick's 'The Shining' (I say Kubrick's, because the TV version sucks) is beyond great. Infact, I just love that movie.

Shining was an artsy film full of symbolism and a message... Phantasm was a low-budget fun ride. It's like comparing Brazil to Commando.

The Shining is one of my-all time favorites, but Phantasm was still a fun, sorta kooky haunted-house ride nonetheless.

IMHO The Shining takes three out of the four. &nbsp Phantasm takes the "funnier" catagory because of some unintentionally (giant mutant insect) funny scenes.

Well, when I was younger, The Shining was one of my favorite movies. However, at the same time, Phantasm was my favorite movie, full stop.

I thought Phantasm had it's merits, but The Shining was just a truly scary movie when I first saw it, and still is to this day. The winner for me is The Shining.
