Just played the scene and typed what I heard. ;)
|
Well, that was an easy enough way.

Any further personal attacks in this thread will be cause for banning. Keep it on topic folks.

In case you're going to include the entire exchange...
I believe it should be "puerco pibil", "Barillo cartel", and "coup d'etat" (not "cudita"). Perhaps the mistakes come from an Engrish subtitle track? It was a pretty cool scene. |
the mistakes came from me just typing what I heard and spelling as best as I could. ;)

Originally posted by Jackskeleton the mistakes came from me just typing what I heard and spelling as best as I could. ;) The funny thing is, the more I see the commercials, the more I keep thinking "that was a cool part". But I felt a bit disappointed upon leaving the theater. Anyway, I know I'll get it, but I can wait for the "official" DVD. |
Weird...I thought that the part where El wakes up, finds himself chained to Carolina, and then undergoes that amazing "swing" scene was all a dream...like he had nodded off while standing outside the church (or wherever he was). And then, when we're treated to the flashback of his wedding, you see the chains again (this time for real, or so I thought). I had just assumed his dream was based on the chains that they wore during the wedding. I don't know. :)
Interesting movie...a little rapid and fragmented, but enjoyable nonetheless. Makes me want to go back and watch Desperado (it's been quite a few years!). |
You wont get much out of it if you watch desperado again. all those flash backs occur in a stiory that Rodriguez came up with that would have been part 3, but in the long run was just cut up and smashed together with this one. So for that reason, a lot might not make as much sense as it would if we did get that story told to us.

Just got back from seeing this, I thought it was good but I was mildly dissappointed.
It just didn't have the sense of fun that Desperado did. It's more serious, and there's too much going on IMO. Still, there's some bad ass shootouts and its definitely a good movie. I was just expecting too much I guess as I love Desperado and I'm a huge fan of Depp. |
I thought it was decent. Not quite up to Desperado but worth it just for Depp. Mariachi felt like a supporting player here with so many characters floating around.
Spoiler:
3 1/2 stars out of 5 |
Yeah...Mickey killed after Willem told him to..
ps...we're WAY past spoilers...;) |
Oh yeah, he got strangled! Thanks for the reminder!
|
Saw it Friday. LOVED IT!! J. DEPP is the FK'N MAN!!!... That's it.
|
Finally saw this. I'm not a fan of the original El Mariachi, but I thought Desperado was really good. OUATIM isn't as quality of a film as Desperado per se, but I found it to be 10x more entertaining. And normally I hate meandering movies like this, but I had a blast. And Depp should definitely get a spinoff, maybe a prequel.

The New York Times has a story comparing this and a Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River". I haven't read the whole article but as they say about the two films.
"One wants you loathe brutality the other wants you to whoop with glee at every punctured, pinwheeling body" I'm guessing the latter is speaking of Rodriguez's film. Though again i haven't read the whole article so i can't critisize the NY Times for what seems to me mocking Mexico for its blatant violence. I don't know if you can find this article online or not, i'm not familiar with the NY TImes website. But if you get the times from what i've seen of the article, its worth the read. |
okay i can't read all the comments, but from what I gathered, a lot of people didn't like it. But I loved it! I watched it the way I watch a John Woo movie, screw the plot, but watch the action. I loved the way whenever anyone would get shot, they would get blown across the screen. I thought that was really cool. A real delight. I don't think Robert Rodriguez has lost his touch. Some of his movies may be more boring than others, but they are still more fun than the usual Hollywood drivel. Coming from a third world country myself, I loved the way the people came to the defense of a good president. Viva Prosperity!
And oh yeah, I didn't like Desperado. I found it pretentious. But I loved, loved, loved El Mariachi. And I also loved Spy Kids just as much. Robert Rodriguez is a god, and I look forward to more of his films. |

well Desperado reminded me of a El Mariachi, part 2. i felt he didn't bring much more to the screen. it was like el mariachi with a budget of five million instead of 6 thousand. once upon a time in mexico made no pretensions whatsoever. it said, let's blow up people, and whoever doesn't understand the plot, who cares, let's just blow up people. when johnny depp shot the cook, why'd he do it? coz he wanted to. haha! but it's probably coz i had high expectations for Desperado, and I didn't get it, but I had low expectations for Once Upon A Time in Mexico and so I was thrilled. I also loved it when the soldier was shot across the floor in OUATIM and he just spun on the floor from the blast. or when Iglesias or the other one shot those two soldiers and they just fell from the sky.

After watching Desperado again this weekend, I have to lower my opinion of Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
Desperado is just a fun, mindless action flick. Mexico just has too much going on, too many characters the Mariachi doesn't have nearly enough screen time, and most of the action is just absurd and fake. I mean desperado wasn't realistic, but it came off as fun and exciting, where as the stuff in Mexico just came of as cheesy most of the time. I'd have much rather the movie began with the Mariachi's wife and child being killed, then flash ahead a year or so, to him hunting down Marquez. No need for Johnny Depps character, or all the lame political crap IMO. I just wanted to see a good action flick, and Mexico doesn't deliver in that regard when compared with Desperado. |
Question:
Did Rodriguez run into any problems with the violence level with the MPAA. The shootout near the end inside the Palace seemed really badly edited, and I was wondering if the MPAA had any influence on the (original) rhythm of the scene. On a slightly different yet related subject, even if the movie was edited to receive it's R-rating, I find it rather unfortunate that Columbia/TriStar Home Video can release an unrated (R-rated) cut of "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" on DVD, yet they idea of releasing an unrated special DVD edition, with "NC-17" quota of violence is out of the question. An example of this would be restoring 'Desperado' to it's original intensity and graphic violence leve and "Once Upon A Time in Mexico" (if this is the case)l. |
when you speak of the unrated cut of charlie's angels, it's pretty much just a marketing gimmick. what was censored from Desperado anyhow? as for once upon a time, I think rodriguez might not have the same lust for blood as he once did with all the spy kids films and now that he has childern of his own. tuned himself down some.

Meh, I thought the scene worked great as is. More gore doesn't make a better film. ;)
|
I agree with Jack - more gore wouldn't have made that opening any better. It was fantastic as is. The whole scene, with Buscemi telling the story to the bartender, is my favorite opening scene of any movie.
