That was the first movie that came to mind, but then I started thinking about it. I think it's more of the style of the Republic Serials, instead of a legitimate desire to leave it open for a sequel.

Then again I bet that Dino DeLaurents, The Master of Explotation that he is, would have gladly have jumped on the Flash Gordon 2 bandwagon if the movie had taken off.

The other movie I thought of? The Rocketeer. There was a story treatment I got a chance to look over once where it was Cliff vs an army of Nazi Rocketeers. Was pretty cool, true to the comic book - and a real shame that it never panned out.

Burton's Planet of the Apes. While it doesn't hurt my feelings that he hasn't done it yet, I was more than interested to see how he was going to straighten out that train wreck of an ending for the first one.

How about Dario Argento's Three Mothers Trilogy, it was never finished.

One of my favorite 80's teen comedies, Making The Grade. During the credits they pimp the sequel, called "Tourista" or something like that...

I thought he pretty much said he was not interested in doing anything else with it?

Wong Kar-Wai's Days of Being Wild (1991) is planned to be a two-part film. The first film was ended in a cliffhanger that was suppose to be resolved in the next film. But the second part was never filmed since the first part floped.

I remember reading a couple of years ago about a Beavis and Butt-Head Do America sequel, but it never happened.

Also the one I am most disappointed about is Transformers the movie.
Spoiler:
At the end they even mention Optimus Prime coming back (which would have sucked since it would have made his dramatic death less moving)

329 - The Return of Optimus Prime (Part 1)

Original Airdate: 24-Feb-1987
Plot: Humans, using a new experimental metal, pilot their ship into the star in which the ship piloted by Optimus Prime is burning up. They rescue the body and bring it back to Earth. One of the scientists has a grudge against Prime and Transformers and wants to use him as bait to set the other Autobots up. The scientists discover their ship has been covered in spores that induce hate and plan to use these on the Autobots. Another scientist warns the Autobots of the trap, but she is not informed of the whole plan and the Throttlebots, Aerialbots, and many other Autobots are infected. The Decepticons arrive, intending to steal the metal, but are themselves infected, except for Galvatron. The infected Transformers go on a rampage, infecting Transformers and humans alike. Rodimus Prime escapes and shuts down Metroplex, but is pursued and infected by Ultra Magnus. Sky Lynx follows his previous orders and captures a Quintesson to rebuild Optimus. They arrive on Earth and Optimus Prime is brought back to life.

Written by: Cherie Wilkerson & Marv Wolfman
I found the episodes to be an incredibly cheap way to bring back Optimus. Really, it could have been just another sub-par episode with random Autobots. Instead, they try to make another epic conflict, bringing back the use of the matrix complete with "The Touch" song. How many 'darkest hours' can the autobots have, anyway? In my Transformers world, this story arc does not exist.

I thought there was an actual idea for a Spaceballs sequal...

wasnt it going to be "Spaceballs 3: The search for Spaceballs 2"?

Wasn't 'Forest Gump' also up for a sequel at one point? I'm almost positive I remember this being in the works.

After the Star Wars Special Editions that were re-released into theaters I kept expecting Brooks to do something similar with Spaceballs.

With DVDS , that scene when they're watching the Home Video of Spaceballs could be really funny, looking at the special features etc.

I've stated it in another thread as well, but Unbreakable is it for me. I'm a huge comic book fan, and this for me was one of the best comic-book films ever made(yes I know it isn't based on an actual comic). Unbreakable is M. Night's best film and is Bruce Willis's best work to date IMO, and I would be first in line if M. Night did indeed decide to continue his trilogy. I think he underestimates the popularity of the film--everyone that I know that has seen it says it is a great film.

Oh yeah, and Good Burger, too.

Just because the villan returns at the end doesn't mean that a sequal was planned. Sometime it's just a cheesy way to get a 'dramatic' ending.

I heard a version like that was out there. But it wasn't on the theatrical roll or my DVD.

There was a one-week cartoon that did bring him back.

Add Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes to the list - looks like that franchise went nowhere....
