Rainman

So last night I sat down to watch Rainman, which I'd only seen once, way back in 1988.
It's a pretty decent movie. I found it enjoyable, and marveled over how young Cruise looks in it. It had an honourable ending
Spoiler:
of Raymond being sent back to the institution, instead of moving in with Charlie and then helping him run a junk shop or something.

But there was one thing that kept distracting me throughout the movie... Dustin Hoffman's whole preformance. I never realized just how much this movie has been paradied to death. In almost every single scene with Raymond I found my self going "Hey, they used this for a joke on The Simpsons... Ohmigosh, this is what Adam Sandler was referring to in that skit.... Ah ha, so that's what the preist meant about 'good driving' in his sermon..." I was constantly going back and forth between enjoying the movie, at laughing at Hoffman's autistic antics like I was some lowbrow idiot.
Maybe I'll try watching it again in another 15 years.

Yeah, Rainman's really been parodied over the years, which is sad because that was indeed an oscar worthy performance. Rainman was probably one of the few movies i've cried while watching.

I read somewhere that it was originally supposed to star Dennis and Randy Quaid. That would have been very interesting.

I don't remember that line. What part of the movie did Raymond say that?

It would be nice for a SE to come out. I watched this on FULL SCREEN VHS... oh the SHAME!
It'd be nice if the DVD had some documentary on autistic savants. I don't know all that much about the condition and I was wondering how much it had been exaggerated in the movie or how true the movie was.

From the small amount of time I've spent with friends and family with autistic children I remember Rainman being pretty accurate although I haven't seen the movie for a long time. I was told that all autistic people do have a genius trait of one type or another. The key is to find out what their particular trait is.

"Uh oh. Uh oh."

"This movie isn't in widescreen."

"It has a proper... proper aspect ratio of 1.85:1."

"This movie isn't in widescreen."

"Pan and scan sucks. Sucks."
