DVD Theme Nights & Home Film Festivals...

This grouping together movies/shows/documentaries/extras into themes is all part of the DVD experience, the collecting, the obsession, the need to categorize...the FUN.

Get some mates round, break out the beer, the chips n dips, pizza. Hold an all-nighter (or several all-nighters). Your collection is worth zilch if you can't share your enthusiasm.

All you have to do is suggest a movie theme night, 3 (or 4) movies of a related subject matter/genre/thread. Only stipulation: they must be on DVD (so don't move to Movie Section, powers-that-be).

Perhaps you could suggest a whole 2 or 3-day extravaganza for the weekend.

Here's a batch of Home Film Festivals for starters...

Rural Hell Weekend

Friday
Deliverance
The Wicker Man
Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Saturday
The Beguiled
Blair Witch Project
Straw Dogs

Sunday
Misery
Southern Comfort
?

States of Mind

Friday: F***ed up Memory Night Part I
Angel Heart
Dark City
Memento

Saturday: Identity Crisis Night
Suzhou River
Seconds
Suture

Sunday: F***ed up Memory Night Part II
Mullholland Drive
Lost Highway
Jacob's Ladder

Someone's Out To Get Me

Friday: Paranoia Night 1
Clean, Shaven
Abre Los Ojos
Fallen

Saturday: Conspiracy Theory
The Manchurian Candidate
The Conversation
Parallax View
Arlington Road

Sunday: Paranoia Night 2
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Klute
Rosemary's Baby

Well . . . I'm a rulebreaker. My sister and I have this film fest planned for sometime this summer:

Ed Wood (VHS)
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Glen or Glenda

Wow, coincidence, tasha. I held a similar FilmFest a couple of months ago.

Ed Wood Night

Ed Wood
Plan Nine from Outer Space
Pie Plates Over Holywood (doc)

There's also a documentary DVD which I think is called The Haunted World Of Edward D. Wood, Jr. (which contains a commentary), which would also be a contender for such a theme night. Check it out.

and similarly...

Beyond Frankenstein Night

Gods & Monsters
Frankenstein
Bride of Frankenstein
Young Frankenstein

Does it matter that I can only fit 4 people (5 if those on couch are skinny enough) in my living room to watch the tv?

Not at all. Just you and a friend - or a partner, or the family - is suffice.

I regularly watch with just two other people. We take turns in picking the theme of the evening. Sometimes - for extra fun - the others have to guess the choser's theme (the first movie is often a red herring).

This thread is really about similar movies, not similar DVDs. Moving to Movie Talk.

Great minds think alike. I'm really looking forward to the cemeteries with rug-grass and cardboard tombstones, the flying saucer strings and all the other great special effects that I've heard so much about.

tasha

Thanks for your constructive criticism (which you apparently deleted), but your explanation was incorrect. You're basically talking about movie festivals... these could occur on the DVD format, the VHS format, or even on the big screen. This isn't a DVD-related topic.

A good rule of thumb is this: If DVDs didn't exist, could I discuss this topic? If so, then it belongs in Movie Talk.

Topics about DVD special features, release dates, transfers, etc., could not be discussed if the DVDs didn't exist, so they belong in DVD Talk. However, if you're just grouping movies together, then that thread belongs in Movie Talk.

Lastly, if you have a problem with the way we moderate, try sending us an an e-mail and asking for clarification that way instead of insulting us. I doubt that you'd appreciate me coming onto your forum and telling you how to run it.

Back on topic.

I'm sorry, static, but it is annoying, this constantly having threads moved on a whim. I actually stipulated that the movies HAD to be on DVD to be suggested, and went to some lengths to explain that this 'movie night' phenomenon was part and parcel of the DVD experience. DVDs have allowed us access to movies like no other medium.

I would never hold Theme Nights without DVDs - VHS and Big Screen movies have no part here - and this thread is devoted solely to DVDs.

DVDs are about lists and groupings and categorizing. If my enthusiasm about them fails to ignite, I'm sorry...

I was hoping that posting my reasoning on the thread move would show that the thread move wasn't a whim. Look, people have had movie nights with VHS tapes and film festivals on a big screen (Cannes, Sundance, etc.). In the end, you're talking about grouping different films together.

And personally, I think DVDs are about watching.

And DVD Theme Nights aren't?

I apologised, gave my reason for objecting, and you act clever. Never mind.

Remember this is not just about movies but the extras too, hence the inclusion of a Ed Wood documentary on the Ed Wood Night.

Back to topic. Theme Nights in our homes comprising of movies, tv shows, and movie-related stuff, on DVD.
