Open Range: Dances with Wolves or the Postman?

So what is everyone's thought on Open Range? It is of course directed by Costner, which can be good or bad. He directed one of my favorite movies in Dances with Wolves, but is also responsible for the disaster that was the Postman. Open Range does have Robert Duvall, who is a great actor and Annette Bening who has had several great performances as well. The trailer has also been playing on TV for the last week or two and the film doesn't even open until August 15. Is that normal for the trailer to be running a month early? I just wondered what everyone is expecting out of the film. After Dances with Wolves and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Costner was one of my favorite actors but later films have been quite disappointing.

I may not get a chance to see it in the theaters, but I will definitely be seeing this movie. Everyone hates Costner, but when he plays the bad guy, a cowboy, or a baseball player/fan I really like the guy. And I like westerns so I'm looking forward to this one. I can't stand Annette Benning though so I hope she doesn't have that big of a part.

I haven't even heard of this movie, but I just wanted to chime in and say I thought the Postman was a great flick. Hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion!

I've only seen the poster so far, so I can't say if I like it or not. I'll catch it in the theater if it plays near me.

I really enjoyed The Postman. Was actually thinking about buying it last night. I know it's not a popular opinion, but I've always liked Costner, even in the movies where most people hated him. I loved For Love of the Game, The Postman, 3000 Miles To Graceland, and Tin Cup.

And on top of that, I love Westerns, so I will be catching this one opening weekend no doubt.

The Postman is actual a decent movie. It's gets a bad rap as being a terrible movie, but really it's not that bad. It's too long, it does grandstand too much and make Costner out to be some overglorified hero, but really it's a decent post apocalyptic drama. Essentially Waterworld mashed together with Dances. I enjoyed Waterworld too...so go fig.

Open Range? Well, honestly I don't like westerns so we shall see. I'll prolly wait til video. Hopefully it's decent, I actually enjoy Costner's mediocre acting when it's in a decent movie.

i am also going to chime in in defense of the postman. i watched it again a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as everyone says it is. while it's nowhere near the quality of DWW, it's still an entertaining movie. as for this new movie, i didn't even know it was there until i saw a commercial for it recently.

I do admit that I did enjoy 3000 Miles to Graceland. Sure, the script was stupid but Costner and Russell made it work. Plus, it looked great on my 16x9 tv and the DD 5.1 was super. I recommend giving it a rent even though the reviews were horrid on it.

Movie looks good. I've enjoyed most of Costners stuff in the past.
