Jim Jarmusch 101
DEAD MAN is an excellent film with gorgeous B&W cinematography by Robby Mueller, an "electric" electric guitar score by Neil Young, a great Johnny Depp performance, along with excellent support from Robert Mitchum, John Hurt, Gabriel Byrnes, Lance Henrickson, Crispin Glover, and a side-splittin' cameo from Gibby Haines of the Butthole Surfers, that has to be seen to be believed. Wonderful references to William Blake's art and poetry. It also made a lot of critic's top films of the 90s list. Highly recommended.
I've also watched GHOST DOG, on numerous occasions, and Forest Whittaker gives a great, career defining performance in it. Simultaneously hilarious & heart breaking, GD has a great instrumental hip hop score by RZA, gorgeous Robby Mueller cinematograhpy, and Jarmusch's dedicates the film to Seijun Suzuki, J.P. Melville, and Akira Kurosawa, while copping many of their themes and specific scenes from their great films, which he seamlessly incorporates into this beautiful film. Also contains many references to Asian, French and English literature. Highly recommended.
STRANGER THAN PARADISE is Jarmusch's first feature length film, very good, excellent performances all around, and won best first feature at Cannes the year it was released. Highly recommended.
