new directors

there haven't been any new directors to watch out for in awhile. In fact, even the MTV movie awards didn't have a new filmmaker award this year? what's up? has hollywood lost interest in new directors? was that simply a part of the indie craze? are there any new interesting directors out there? if they are, who are they?

How about Kurt Wimmer who directed Equilibrium? I know the film didn't do well and it was also panned by some critics but I happen to love this film. There's David Twohy although he isn't exactly a new director. I've seen 2 of is films...Pitch Black and Below which I thought were excellent. I suppose the new directors out there are busy with the short format or music videos and waiting for their big break to make a feature.

By the way I used to live in Makati in the early 80's.

Joe Carnahan (Narc) and Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) come to mind.

There are always new directors. It's just that new directors aren't often given a hige budget and so forth (or if they do, they lose a lot of the artistic input). So the movies fly under the radar.

I honestly don't mean this as an insult, just an observation, but the fact that you use the "MTV Movie awards" as a basis for lack of new directors shows something. & that while there are TONS of new directors out there, they may not be what you are looking for. . There are absolutely TONS of new directors already more talented than 90% of garbage at an MTV movie award.

Lucky McKee made his very first movie last year & it had a better atmosphere & was more horrifying than probably any maistream movie all year. And the performances this guy got in this movie are simply amazing.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed & wrtoe his first movie last year & it was one of the best film debuts in ages. In the guys very first movie he almost made a film as good as M. Night. Shamalyahan (sp?).

How about Gore Verbinski, does he not count since he wasn't at the MTV movie awards? He has only been directing for a few years now & is really hitting his stride making the best movie of the summer.

AS mentioned Kurt Wimmer is another young director that made summer of the best action movies I've ever seen last year.

Fernando Meirelles - Another young failry new director who made an absolute masterpiece last year.

There are many more amazing young directors out there, most of the above movies are way better than most mainstream movies, you just can't rely on MTV & Access hollywood to tell you who the good creators are.

normally I would agree with you, except when you read the MTV Movie Awards Best New Filmmaker Award winners, you won't look at it too shabbily.

2002 -- Christopher Nolan - Memento
2001 -- Sofia Coppola - The Virgin Suicides
2000 -- Spike Jonze - Being John Malkovich
1999 -- Guy Ritchie - Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
1998 -- Peter Cattaneo - The Full Monty
1997 -- Doug Liman - Swingers
1996 -- Wes Anderson - Bottle Rocket
1995 -- Steve James - Hoop Dreams
1994 -- Steve Zaillian - Searching for Bobby Fischer
1993 -- Carl Franklin - One False Move
1992 -- John Singleton - Boyz N the Hood
