ANOTHER useless remake -- Back To School
The only possible good thing to come of this..? Rodney will get more $$$.
from Zap2It.com
MGM has decided to remake Rodney Dangerfield's 1986 film BACK TO SCHOOL, and they've signed a deal with Dangerfield to make a cameo and act as producer. The original film saw Dangerfield playing a wealthy and obnoxious businessman that enrolled in college to encourage his son (Robert Downey, Jr.) to attend.

Man, these websites that post this "news" don't research their stories well. Robert Downey, Jr. didn't play Dangerfield's son, Keith Gordon did.
BTW the idea of a remake for this film is absolutely a horrible idea. It's not even that old.

Perhaps that's what's going to be different about the new one..?
And, dude, 1986 was like a trillion years ago.. This flick was SCREAMING for a remake...duh.

LOL! An Error!
Robert Downey Jr. played Derek-the sons friend/roommate!
The son (Jason Mellon) was played by Keith Gordon-who hasn't done much since that movie.
A big no to the remake but if they are going to do it, maybe we will get a special edition DVD of the orginial out of it? (complete with a free ticket to see the remake since thats probably the only way I'll see it!.)

What's the freaking point?! It's not like the first one is all that dated(Oingo Boingo cameo notwithstanding). And how are they ever gonna recapture the brilliance of the Professor Terguson scene? Particularly in the politically correct times we currently live in.

Is this Hollywood's way of finally saying "Yep folks, we admit it, we are completely out of ideas"

That didn't seem to stop studios from remaking The RING, Back to School is a hell of a lot older than that movie. Not to mention, Intacto which is all of 2 years old, & being remade.

They're different, though, because they're foreign films that weren't well-known to the American public, and with the case of Ring and Infernal Affairs, they weren't even accessible.
There's no excuse for a Back To School remake, which isn't a terribly good film on its own. It depends very highly on the strength of Rodney Dangerfield, and he's on top form here, which is why it works so well.

First a brilliant-looking remake of "Can't Buy Me Love"...

Now this. These films are loved as products of their time. I think it will be tough to remake them in today's film marketplace and keep them endearing.

Um...am I missing something here. I enjoyed Back to School a bit (more because it was filmed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I went to school) but people are acting like they are remaking Casablanca with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez...oh wait.
Anyways, while this may indeed signal that Hollywood is, yes, finally out of original ideas, it's not the huge sacriligous (sp?) thing that some people are making it out to be. It's just a B-movie from the 80s that is being remade here. Just don't go see it.

Instead of a remake, they should do a "Special Edition", since the director was not able to realize his true vision with the limited special effects available at the time. Imagine how much better the "Triple Lindy" would be with state of the art computer graphic effects!

So will this be the return of WILLIAM ZABKA! Where's that appreciation thread of his...
Seriously, how can you re-make such a classic? No one can replace Dangerfield or Kinison.

I've got ideas to remake Old School. Don't get me wrong, very funny flick, but it's a bit dated now. Not to mention with my new "tricked out" style of CGI animation, I'm going to make the Blue character out of total CGI, and make him like 200+ years old. I've got ideas......who's with me on this one!
I'm sure others would like a remake of "The Hulk"...or is that just "Hulk"?
