Speaking of "Carrie the Musical," I've always been curious about what they sang during the tampon throwing scene.

Nicolas Cage, who I hate above all others, makes me want to vomit blood. The idea of him starring in a remake of one of my favorite films makes me want to then crap blood on my vomited blood.
So, how do you really feel about him? This is pretty vague

This sounded stupid untill I heard Neil LeBute is involved.

You guys are really selling this short. He's a brilliant director and I doubt he would be approaching this project if he didn't have something to bring to the material that made it worth seeing again.
I don't know if I'm ready to call LaBute brilliant yet. I thought Possession was a big, disappointing bore. But the edgier and more disturbing the material is, the better he is (e.g. In the Company of Men).

Since The Wicker Man is nothing if not edgy and disturbing, this may be perfect for him.

Nicolas Cage's Next is The Wicker Man
Source: Variety March 4, 2005

Nicolas Cage's next picture will be director Neil LaBute's remake of 1973 thriller The Wicker Man, with Millennium Films, Equity Pictures and Emmett/Furla Films producing, reports Variety.

LaBute adapted the screenplay, in which a sheriff investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a remote island off the coast of Maine. His hopes of unraveling the girl's disappearance become increasingly uncertain when he discovers evidence of pagan rituals.

The movie will begin production July 15 in Vancouver. Cage is currently shooting comic book adaptation Ghost Rider in Melbourne.

Nicholas Cage, huh? Well, at least it's not Ben Affleck.

The original was a cult hit only as far as I remember. I just don't see how this flick would appeal to mainstream audiences unless they stray far away from the original material.

I think I'm set with my 2-disk DVD set of the original, thank you very much. Like most of you, this seems a completely pointless remake. Carrie the Musical might not be too bad. After all, Reefer Madness and Little Shop of Horrors may have sounded like stupid ideas until you saw them. Has anyone heard any other casting -- like who plays Christopher Lee's part?

Yes, they learned American audiences will go see anything devoid of originality...therefore Hollywood keeps churning out the remakes.

What's next, an "I Spit on Your Grave" remake?? Yep, and it will probably be rated PG-13 for "excessive groping".

Huh...Neil Labute is directing this??? That seems like a strange choice.

I am interested in seeing what they do to this since I am a very recent fan of the original film. Caught it on satellite and had no clue what it was about. Watched most of it with my mouth open (stunned at something so original yet I had never heard of it)and couldn't wait to see it again.

What the flip is that poster supposed to represent? It just looks wierd IMO.
Surely it should say "A Neil Labutte rip-off of a Robin Hardy film"?

I hope the ending will be the same.

I'll say it again. Hollywood has been re-making films since the early days. Ya'll act like it's a new thing.

True.. it used to remake sound versions of all the silent movies, The Merry Widow (1925/34) or Anna Kerenina (sp?) (1935) is a remake of Greta Garbo's Love. But thats only its own products. Did it keep remaking films from other countries then?

Set in Maine, huh? Trying to ride Stephen King coat tails?

A large part of the original's effectiveness was due to the fact that it was practically a folk musical - think about how much singing and dancing (albeit erotic) there was. The seemingly naive simplicity is what made the eventual conclusion so chilling.

(As for the Christopher Lee role - John Malkovich, Gary Oldman or Christopher Walken.)

This just doesn't grab me... I like the original, but the synopsis just sounds bland.

Update:

Leelee Sobieski and Ellen Burstyn are joining Nicolas Cage in Neil LaBute's indie "The Wicker Man," produced by Millenium Films, Equity Pictures and Emmett/Furla Films. A remake of a 1973 British horror film, "Wicker Man" centers on a police officer (Cage) who is investigating the disappearance of a girl in a small cultlike community. Sobieski plays a barmaid who is Cage's confidant. Burstyn plays the head of the cult. The film is shooting in Vancouver.

I'll see this only if Cage is actually burned alive. Like, for real. On film. I'd pay to see that. Otherwise? Meh.
