Of course Lynch talks in "dream" language. Therefore, there must be more than one way to view his films. But, I think there is a slightly more to the take you present.

Spoiler:
I think you are correct that nothing really happened -- that is up to the point about 2/3rd's through the film. at this point reality kicks in... My basic take is that Watt's character is in the final moments of death... the weird dream portions of the film reflect the confused nature of her mind, not willing to let go and pass on to the next plane... the point of the Silencio Club performance is to convince her mind/soul to let go.... which she does in the end -- after she accepts her actions and their outcomes...

I agree, for a different reason.

The first visit to the Silencio serves as the illusion-breaker, showing the illusion of film and forcing Betty out of the dream.

But the film also ends at the Silencio - showing us the audience that its the end of the film (dream) and we're forced back into real life. To discuss what the hell we just saw.

Yup. I think Mulholland Drive may be the best film about film ever.

salon.com artcle

i was confused after seeing it in the theatres, then i ran across an article in salon.com

just go to the site and search "mulholland drive" - the article is entitled "everything you've wanted to ask about MD but were afraid to ask"

cleard everything up. i am pissed i did get it the first time. i was looking too deep after seeing "lost highway" that i missed the obvious.

The Salon.com article is good, but it's not the final word on interpretation. As always with Lynch, a lot of the meaning is left for each individual of the audience to decide. By the way, that article is linked from the second post of this very thread.

There was a theory that I read that seemed to fit best...
Spoiler:
...that from the point of the transformation in the cell to the last shot is all a dream state of the main character prior to his electrocution. Similar to Mulholland Drive the main character attempts to 'start fresh' inside his head, but things go south as one cannot escape oneself.

yeah, someone has pointed me to a write-up of that theory before too....and while it fits some of the things in the film, it doesn't fit them all.....and I don't think any single theory ever will. It doesn't, for instance, explain any of the stuff before prison that doesn't make any sense. The story is too complex and folds back upon itself a few times.....
Spoiler:
Unless someone wants to argue the whole film is a dream, or an altered memory, or whatever, in which case you wouldn't even need to throw in a theory about the movie being about a man on death row escaping his reality through dreams. The only thing I think that theory explains nicely, is Bill
Pullman twitching about in the car at the end, and that is not enough for me to consider that theory above any others.

I'm just not the type of person who needs to find a solution to every film, because there just might not be one.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I finally watched this film, and really just wanted to add my accolades to mix. I really enjoyed this movie. Besides being a visual and thematic masterpiece, the acting by the two female leads was outstanding. Especially Ms. Watts!

I only wish I'd read the salon.com article after a second viewing as I think I had the basic plot down after the first viewing, but was just missing a few parts.

Still don't really understand it all (but I don't think you're really supposed to anyway) but this will be a film I'll enjoy watching again and again in the future.

Glad I finally got around to this one.

I watched this on cable. I've never been more pissed at letterboxing than I was during the bed scene.

I have a hard time trying to imagine how the movie would have turned out if he had directed it.

I've read several places the George Lucas offered Return of the Jedi to him also. I can't begin to imagine how that would have turned out.

After months/years of shying away from watching this movie based on being completely pissed off at how incoherent and freaky Lynch's past movies seemed, I viewed it last night. It seemed to have much more coherence and characters that were grounded in "planet earth" reality. I enjoyed the Betty/Rita storyline. I really like Naomi Watts and went forward with this movie based on her performance in 21 Grams. It was getting very late and I was very tired during the last 45 minutes of the movie, so there was a lot that I didn't pick up on. I will go back and watch it again at some point. At least the movie wasn't a total freakout session like some of Lynch's other movies.

As an aside, what's the deal with having no scene selection in the menu and making the entire movie only one chapter on the DVD. Kind of makes it impossible to resume viewing at a later time if you take a break. I went to go switch the audio from d/d to dts and couldn't get back to where I left off in the movie.

Aside from Dune, I don't think Lynch puts chapter stops in his DVDs, or at least the ones he personally oversees. That said, we all know you just wanted to be able to skip the Naomi and Laura "comforting" each other scene.

Interesting that three years after its release, this movie can stil generate so much conversation.

Watched Mulholland Drive For The First Time (WOW). Spoiler Warning!

I've always wanted to see this movie but never did (for some reason or another). I recenty saw "King Kong" and enjoyed Naomi Watt's performance and decided to check out some of her early films so I rented "Mulholland's Drive."

What a weird and wild ride.
Spoiler:
The thing that confused me the most was when they (Betty and Rita) came back from that weird late night play, they both return to their home (or I should say Betty's apartment), and when Rita looks in the closet Betty is gone.
Now, I like weird movies as much as the next movie fanatic but what was David Lynch trying to say here. Everything just changes (roles change, the plot changes) without any answers or reasons. Are the two characters one? At first I thought Lynch was telling the story backwards but then that wasn't right.

Man, there are so many questions and no answers.
Spoiler:
What's with the dead body in Diane's apartment when Betty and Rita show up? Is that Betty's alternate idenity or something? Does every character have an alternate idenity? When the movie ended I felt sorry for Betty (or should I say Diane).

I loved "Twin Peaks" and this movie lives up to Lynch's style but it left me perplexed (but in a good way). I did enjoy this movie very much. Anybody felt the same way as me (confused, perplexed)?

You might want to search "Mulholland Drive" in the movie area. There is at least one lengthy thread you should find interesting discussing the plot.

har har, I just watched it as well for the first time and i was confused as hell from the last 30 minutes. Also the no chapter skip thing pissed me off the most. i had missed a scene or 2 because my brother came down to talk, and idiot me forgot to press stop. when hitting hte "back" button, the movie started over again. so i had to go back to where i thought i was.

It's amazing how 4 years have gone by, and people (like myself) still try to unlock the mysteries of this film. It blows my mind away. Awesome work by Lynch.
