Another Hannibal Lecter prequel?

I've read all the books and seen all the movies as well, and as a big Lecter fan, I didn't think the book Hannibal Rising was awful, but definitely not up to par of Red Dragon or SOTL. I will see the movie though as I enjoyed the book and hope to enjoy the movie as well.

I just realized, Anthony Hopkins isn't in this film, even in some kind of cameo at the end. Makes it a hell of a lot easier for me to pretend it doesn't exist.

I really do not like 'origin' movies.

I'm going to be in the vast minority, but I actually enjoyed the film. I think it was a better film than Hannibal. It probably gives Lecter too much of a heroic backstory, but its well directed and I liked Gaspard Ulliel in the lead. Plus, I like revenge movies.

fallfan, you're absolutely right. It was just fine, and dovetailed nicely with character traits we already knew about Hannibal. People just wanted more Hopkins, which I can understand, but the filmmaker(s) did a fine job of it without him.

if they wanted to go back in time in the series they should have done the movie on when william peterson/edward norton character caught hannibal.

Was it a necessary prequel? Nahh, probably not...
Was it good, gory, sick fun for the horror fan? Abso-fackin'-lutely!

Saw it this weekend and left completely boggled by it, which didn't surprise me. I have issues with Lector's "redeeming" motivation for his killing spree in this flick. And wtf, don't get me started with Gong Li's character.

I didn't like it at all. It seemed somewhat inconsistant with the Hannibal Lector we all know and love from Silence of the Lambs.
Also, I was completely distracted throughout the entire movie because the guy who played Hannibal, I thought, looked just like George McFly

As a standalone movie, it was okay. But it just didn't feel like Hannibal Lector to me at all. Origin or not, the eloquent twisted genius from Silence/Red Dragon is completely absent here. I understand him not starting off that way, but it would have been nice to see the transformation occur over the course of the film. Even by the end, I didn't feel like I was watching Hannibal Lector.
Hannibal (the film) was a departure as well, but at least that had the benefit of Hopkins to tie it together a bit. This guy just didn't exude the essence of Hannibal at all IMO.
The whole thing just felt too grandiose, too much like a forced epic. It felt more like Batman Begins in tone than Silence/Red Dragon. I think a simpler backstory that didn't involve
might have been more credible.

Harris' inspiration for Hannibal? Remember the Cable Movie "Citizen X"?

I saw "Hannibal Rising" and it was ok. Nothing special, nothing great, but not totally bad. Someone told me there was "twist" at the end but I don't know what the hell they were talking about....
