LOTR - Return of the King - 4+ hrs long!

1. It is indeed, far and way better than both Fellowship and Two Towers.
2. It was a 4 hour, 20 minute cut of the film.
3. Feeling that he has proven audiences will gladly sit for 3 hours of quality cinema, Peter Jackson will try to leave the film's 1/6 of a day total time as is.

I have to believe that Jackson will cut this down somewhat. To be honest, after seeing the extended version of Fellowship of the Ring... I enjoyed the additional 30 minutes, but I think their absence makes for a better, tighter movie.

I heard it's going to be 72 hours long with no intermission and you have bring your own food and cook it in the theater. There will be portions of the film where the characters on screen stop to rest and eat and this will be a cue to the audience to eat as well.

Nonsense. This is an estimate about the length of the rough cut, largely fictional in all probability. If New Line is feeling generous they will allow the final cut to go 3 1/2 hours, and that will be amazing if it happens. It may be four or more for the ROTK Extended Edition, but there is no way it will theatrically shown at that length. Too much money would be lost and the theatres would be forced to have intermissions which would play havoc with their operations.

Wasn't that Gods and Generals movie 4 hours long? If a crappy movie can get away with it why not a proven winner?

If a movie is good, 4 hours will fly by....
However, I agree that this will be shaved down if for no other reason than to make Theater Owners happy. A shorter movie means more shows

* At around three hours each, FotR and TT rank 11th and 7th all time at the box office.
* This will be the third in a To-be-continued series meaning there will be a large fan base wanting resolution. This might off-shoot the extra time by having more people go.
* Theaters would likely LOVE being able to have an intermission since most of their revenue comes from concession sales. An intermission would mean more money for them. In fact, when TT came to my local discount theater, they did add an intermission.
* Having made them so much money already, and winning and being nominated for so many awards, New Line might "reward" Jackson with a longer cut.
Personally, I don't think it will be 4 1/2 hours, but it isn't a completely ridiculous thought. Here's hoping, though.

If this movie was 6 hours I'd sit through it so 4 hours and 20 mins. is no big deal. But I doubt the studio would allow it (regardless of how much money the previous two films have already made). I'm sure they'll negotiate it down to 3 hours or maybe less if New Line decides to be real hard asses about not wanting less showings.

TT was tediously slow, so I really hope that ROTK is not over 3 hours. If they have enough quality material to make it over 4 hours, they should make it into two movies and release them simultaniously. That way they would make a helluvalot of money.

If New Line were to make no money on this last one at all they have still gotten back RIDICULOUS profit from the first two. They don't have to make money, and they know this will friggin be awards fodder for sure. Make it 4 hours with intermission.

I'll believe 4+ hours for the EE DVD version. Doubtful for the theatrical release.
Anybody have a copy of the book handy? How does the page count compare to the first two parts? It's been a long time since I read the series, but i seem to recall a lot of the book was made of background notes and appenix's. And we already know the scouring of the Shire won't make it to the sceen.
Seems to me that even the 3 hour version is going to require some padding.
