Story of Wong Fei Hung Part I was 72 minutes. There were 98 sequels all starring Kwan Tak Hing. [according to my Heroic Grace program]

Japan has the "Tora-san" series that ended with I believe 44 movies with the same actor. The actor (can't remember his name) passed away a few years ago, ending the series.

I think the sequel craze came right about the same time people figured out they could make money on movies. Sequels have been around forever, from Bride of Frankenstein to Godzilla part whatever to Matrix Reloaded. Of course, we could blame books for starting this "sequel" thing as I heard some authors have been known to write sequels also.

Too much of a good thing coud be bad in the long run and having sequels tend to dull the creative process like using the same characters dragging a plot or storyline or in some actors cases they could be typecast as certan characters in a movie or Tv show. not only do studio execs get richer but so do some actors who demand higher saleries for each sequel they appear in and well as directors and writers who draw up the scripts it's sure a tangled web they weave how sad.

Nope~Frankenstein was the first in 1931, sequel Bride of Frankenstein in 1935, 3rd was cancelled when Colin Clive died in 1937, born in 1898 was only 39 years old.
