Stephen King's IT query

I watched this on yesterday and I have to say I am more than a little confused.

At the very end of the film when they
Spoiler:
confront the pennywise/spider thingy, what exactly was it? I thoroughly don't understand what actually happened. I was OK thinking that Pennywise was some malevolent, murderous monster but then the film took this crazy twist and I am so lost.

Could someone explain this ending to me so I won't feel quite so daft.

Thanks

I believe that the spidery monster was supposed to be Pennywise's true form or something.

The ending of the series was technically correct but instead of some intelligent, maleovelent creature it was turned into a dumb spider.

The ending to this has always been a disappointment - and if you listen to the commentary track, even the personnel involved feel that way.

Thanks,
I thought it was just me, but the ending was a huge let down. I'll listen to the commentary once I get around to watching this one again.
