Tom Hanks Does Kurosawa
From Tuesday's Daily Variety:
DreamWorks is negotiating with Richard Price to script a remake of the 1952 Akira Kurosawa fiml "Ikiru" as a starring vehicle for Tom Hanks.
The article also mentions that Hanks is going to star in the Coen Brothers remake of The Ladykillers.

Richard Price wrote Clockers right?
I don't know what to say about this. It could be REALLY pretentious. I just can't picture Tom Hanks sitting on a swing set, singing to himself in the snow. In fact the thought makes me laugh histaricaly!
We'll see...but I'm always on guard when it comes to remakes

I dunno - might be doable, actually. Tom Hanks can do the worn out everyman sort of thing - though he's still too young for Ikiru, methinks. Set it in the states... the story is universal enough.
As long as they don't try to tack on a Hollywood happy ending.

As much as I idolize Kurosawa, this might actually be a remake that might be worth watching. Tom Hanks is about the only American actor that could pull this movie off and not embarass himself.
Granted, I'd prefer it if they never EVER made remakes of any movie. There's enough original ideas in the world. Even some of the crappy screenplays out there have to be better than Godzilla.
