Spirited Away rerelease

From IMDb:

And Spirited Away, the animated feature winner that is now being screened in only seven theaters will move into 800, according to the Times.
Sounds good, I still havn't seen it.

Rypro 525 03-25-03 01:07 PM

Will this delay the dvd, and I sure hope that it comes to the owings mills theater.

Hiro11 03-25-03 01:44 PM

About f'ing time.

trigun 03-25-03 01:54 PM

Did Disney have 800 prints made immediately after the Oscars or what?

Rypro 525 03-25-03 02:00 PM

I read on a european forum that if spirited away won the oscar, they would put it on 1000 screens.

I don't think the DVD will be delayed, review copies have already been sent out (see IGN's review).

Giles 03-25-03 03:40 PM

Well it looks like from the IGN review that the R1 drops the 'complete film' in pencil sketch form that the second disc of the R2 has.

I believe it was around 150.

I wonder if any of these 800 screens are going to show the dubbed version.

Seeker 03-26-03 12:10 AM

I assume almost all of the 800 will show the English version.

Now that J6P wonders what this is about, they will still expect it in Enligsh....

theneobez 03-26-03 05:21 AM

Never got to see it in theatres, which was a mistake on Disney's part. Hopefully it'll get the attention it deserves now, but now the DVD probably gets delayed.

-rolleyes-

Yeah because they did such a terrible job with it... -rolleyes-

come on, disney released two versions in theaters, an english dub and sub version on DLP... how much more do you want? I command disney for the work they did and their improvement on anime films.

ChemDoc 03-26-03 08:13 AM

I had to drive 100 miles to see it on the big screen. I hope it comes closer to home. I'd love to see it on DLP.

Rypro 525 03-26-03 09:47 AM

Yay, its playing at my theater.

I thought Eisner commanded Disney. In that case, can you do something about all the crappy animated sequels?

Yo man, I meant it was Disney's fault because it got such a crappy release here in the states. Come on, I couldn't find a single place that would show the film. That's Disney's fault, I didn't say they made bad films or they were a bad company, I was just saying they should have given it a larger release here in the states.

I think there's more truth to that than you know. Disney still has to put profitable films in the theaters. It's not (entirely) Disney's fault that J6P has no taste. The days where studios owned theaters and forced you to watch what they wanted you to watch are over. The fact that they got it to all the major markets (unless you live in "Siberia, MI") should be good enough.

This is kind of suspicious. How long does it take to make 800 new prints of a film?

Spirited Away played 2 weeks last fall at an art house here.
At the time, I saw zero TV ads, I heard zero radios ads, and saw maybe 2 print ads promoting the film (these ads were probably placed by the theater). It did get free publicity from the local film critics that praised the film.

Starting Friday, Spirited Away is going to be playing in the megaplexes!

Rypro 525 03-26-03 06:45 PM

I think disney had that many made just in case it won the oscar since I heard that they made a deal with the director that they would show it on so many screens if it won the oscar.

Say what you will, a movie like this would die on 2000 screens regardless of the push you put behind it. The audience for anime on the big screen is not that big and powerful, the fact that it played on a few hundred screens last fall was quite a showing. It wouldn't be uncommon for a smaller rollout, or even a traveling print.

Now that its on 800, thats a big number.....Disney could have easily just pumped the DVD quicker and skipped giving people oppurtunity to see it on the big screen.

Seeker 03-26-03 09:04 PM

I think most J6Ps won't quite understand it - the kids would love it, but kid's movies are still directed at kids AND the sensibilities of the adults.

Jackskeleton 03-26-03 10:01 PM

Anime on the big screen like clemente said, would die on that amount of screens. Remember, it's still a niche market.

Look at other animation films... tressure planet, Iron Giant, Titan AE. all those mature targeted audiances met with little draw. disney pushed it in a good way. and with a dub and sub out they did a hell of a good job if you ask me.

Any chance of having the documentary material and such, only with English subs or dubs? I bought the 2-disk set vs. the 1-disk on Ebay way back when, only to realize later that I don't speak Japanese.

It had to be more than that. I remember organizing a group who were willing to drive 2 hours to either Tampa or Orlando to see it, but it was shown in the theatre 2 blocks from my house. This is a town of 80,000 people and 2 movie theatres.
