The friday paper showed that it is coming to 3 theaters in my city.

It will be interesting to see how it does.
I hope it does well. |
I doubt it will get in top ten no matter how many good reviews it gets. Its PG, there are no talking animals, and parents will think "this is a disney movie, I can bring the young kids" when they probably won't understand it or will get scared by it. How it made 5 million dollars on just a max of 150 screens is amazing. But I hope more people other than hardcore anime nuts and stupid parents with their kids see this movie.

I'll be seeing it this weekend, I checked moviefone.com, it'll be playing at the 24 screen theatre, I really can't wait. I think alot of you are underestimating the potential of the film, it won't have the amount of success it had in Japan, but I believe it will make quite a bit this weekend for 800 screens.

If it makes 5 million, I will be surprised.

For those in southern CA, Castle in the Sky is playing April 6-8 as a part of the Newport Beach Film Festival.

Good thing to see this movie out in wider release. I never got the chance to see it (my fault, it was playing in a few theaters locally) so hopefully I'll drag my butt out to see it this time. Regarding the comments that Disney botched the release, umm, I don't think so. Their release was quite commendable, enough so they gave it a push enough to get an Oscar. Seriously, Disney is a company, not a philanthropic movie entity. You can't expect them to spend millions of dollars pushing this movie when the chances of it making more than 20 million at the box office are practically nil. It is a niche market product. Perhaps we wish to label those who are not interested in this as moronic, simple minded, joe six pack, but I'd rather not. I'd prefer to enjoy the movie and give Disney credit for bringing it here and giving it the exposure it is giving. Honestly, if some of the people on this board were in charge of movie studios, they'd all be bankrupt in about 2 months. Nonetheless, it would be nice to see this do well after the Oscar win, perhaps setting up a potential for other anime to play here in the states on a wider basis.

I guess you're right Jaeufraser, you make a good point.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this film! The trailers are on TV and they raise the hair on the back of my neck.
I think quite a few folks might go see it. My son liked it so much he invited a couple of friends over and we all trooped off to see Castle in the Sky at a local film festival but it sold out about ten minutes before we had the tickets in our hand. Bill Chance The Daily Epiphany |
Just on a side note - it opened today in 711 theaters, a bit shy of the 800 previously reported, but still a good amount non-the-less. Hoping it the best of luck.

Just got back from seeing it the theater in my local town, and it was sold out. It seems that the kiddies like the little hamster and bird alot as you could hear them laughing.
|
I caught it with my friend Friday after missing it in its previous release. I loved it and thought about actually bringing my daughter to it. Except for the length, I think she would love it and think most kids would actually take very well to this one. I might just wait and buy it on DVD and let her see it. She was sooooo pissed at me that I wouldn't let her watch Grave of the Fireflies with me, so maybe this will make it up to her. :)

I just saw this film, and I came away unimpressed. The first 30 minutes were good, the next hour was a bit on the torturous side for me, and then the last 30 minutes were good. It didn't quite capture my attention and hold it for the entire film. Maybe a second viewing might help, but it'll be on DVD if that happens.

Just got back, incredible film. Completely satisified, and now I'm looking forward to the DVD release in . . .2 1/2 weeks? Very Beautiful and very sweet, all of you go see it! It did seem a bit long, but other than that I have no complaints.

Doesn't seem to be setting the theaters on fire, but ah well.
The first two times I saw the movie, it seemed too short. The third time felt as if I'd just watched FOTR and TTT back-to-back. |
i had been waiting for the DVD version because i didn't want to see a dubbed version, but ended up seeing the dubbed version last night and was VERY impressed. maybe the best dub job i've seen on a film. i obviously haven't seen the original language version (which i plan to see on DVD), but nothing was particularly glaringly bad.
spirited away had the best elements of all of Miyazaki's films i've seen... great cute imaginative critters (ala totoro) and exciting adventures (ala princess mononoke). after being angry at disney for their treatment of this movie, i'm now hoping spirited away gets the audience it deserves. disney should look back on this and realize that they could've done much better (and made a lot more money) if they'd promoted it correctly. |
I think it's interesting how Miyazaki once said that Spirited Away was designed for a Japanese audience and might not play well for an American one, but I saw no problem with it working here. "Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko", on the other hand, is one seriously weird-ass movie.
