Pulp Fiction - Casting Mistake?

I don't understand one thing in Pulp Fiction - those white kids who Vincent and Jules get the briefcase back from ("Lookit the smart brain on Brad!"). Those soft kids were doing business with Marcellus Wallace?! C'mon!! And what did Marvin have to do with them?

You'd have thought Brad and his guys would have been a little rougher around the edges, no?

That main guy was in Career Opportunities with Jennifer Connelly and Swimming with Sharks with Kevin Spacey. He also is the guy who kills Jimmy Hoffa in Hoffa.

And that other white kid hiding in the bathroom with "the cannon" was a Jerry Seinfeld lookalike! Surely Jerry Seinfeld lookalikes couldn't be mixed up with the mob, could they?!

Frank Whaley

First saw him in "Born on the Fourth of July" with Tom Cruise.

just for clarifciation's sake:

"Look at the big brain on Brett!" is the quote.....it sounds like Brad, and since that's my name i've heard it a million times....but Whaley's character name is actually Brett.

And no, i don't think any were miscast....we don't know what kind of business they were doing for him - could have been hackers for all we know....

Frank Whaley is also in Field of Dreams and The Freshman, two of my favorites from that late '80s/early '90s period.

I thought that was part of the point. These kids were way in over their heads and I thought it added a lot of tension to the scene because of it. You knew it wasn't going to end well for them because they were so outmatched, and the whole conversation about burgers and such just served to draw out that awful feeling in your gut as you watch the scene.

Was Marvin the connection between Marcellus and Brett? If so, why was he scared? If he wasn't, then why wasn't he terminated along with the rest of the group? Why was he taken along with Vince & Jules?

That is exaclty how I felt about it, it also leaves something more to the imagination then seeing a bunch of thugs that got messed up screwing with Marcilus.

Also the Jerry lookalike is actually Alexis Arquette, the brother to Patricia, David and Rosanna.

"Pulp Fiction - Casting Mistake?"

I never, ever, not once in a million years, thought that I'd ever read THAT.

Pleasssee do not get me wrong -- I enjoyed every minute of Pulp Fiction, and couldn't think of a thing to change (other than the killing of Travolta's character), but I just thought that Brett's gang would've been tougher than those fresh-out-of-the-water fishies.

If the point was to convey that those kids were way over their heads (as seems to be the popular consensus here), then bravo! Point well taken.

But who was Marvin?

Oh, and since Vincent Vega accidentally kills Marvin, perhaps it is Marcellus' punishment to Vincent that he sit in wait at Butch's apartment (that is, if Marvin actually meant something to Marcellus). It was a ******** assignment - nobody thought Butch would go back there - and a flunky could have done the job, but they sent Vincent there instead.

Also "Marvin" (my favorite quote/quotes from the movie
Spoiler:
Jules: Oh! ****'s happening!
Vincent: Man, I shot Marvin in the face.
Jules: Why the **** did you do that! Oh man I've seen some crazy ass **** in my time!
Vincent: Chill out, man. I told you it was an accident. You probably went over a bump or something.
Jules: Hey, the car didn't hit no mother****ing bump.
Vincent: Hey, look man, I didn't mean to shoot the son of a bitch! The gun went off. I don't know why.
Jules: Well look at this ****ing mess, man. We're on a city street in broad daylight.
Vincent: I don't believe it.
Jules: Well believe it now, mother****er! We gotta get this car off the road. You know cops tend to notice **** like your driving a car drenched in ****ing blood.
Vincent: Take it to a friendly place, that's all.
Jules: We're in the Valley, Vincent! Marcellus ain't got no friendly places in the Valley.
Vincent: Well Jules this ain't my ****ing town! ****!

I think the casting was perfect. Jules wouldn't of come off so well if they were all tough guys.

They needed them cats for the part, they needed someone who Samuel L. Jackson could rip into which he did,if they where part of the mob or something along the lines of organized crime then it would have been a little unrealistic.

Yeah apparently Alexis is a crossdresser. Do you remember the character George in the Wedding Singer, than sang backup for Adam Sandler? Yeah, that was him.
