The Karate Kid

just finishing watching my karate Kid boxset and must admit, i did enjoy this trip back to the 80s

The original karate kid movie is the best by far. The sequels are watchable, but the original has the full 'underdog triumph over evil' thing happening to perfection with a perfect '80s feelgood backdrop' to fit nicely in line with the tv sitcoms at the time like Family ties and the cosby show.

THe only thing which didn't sit too well with me was Freddy and his friends. They dropped being friends with Daniel after the fight. Daniel was saving a girl's honour and then got beat up by the toughest guy in school who happened to be a black belt at karate. Gee, really disgraceful eh Freddy ! That geeky one who said "you sure choose cold people to hang out with Freddy" especially pissed me off, i mean as if they could have done any better against Johnny !

Pat Morita really was brilliant as My Miyagi. Other highlights include the cool 80s soundtrack and Martin Kreese

One of my all-time favorites! John G. Avildson (director of Rocky) directed this and both movies are on the same level, when all is said and done.

They sure don't make movies like they used to...

I used to think the same thing. Isn't Freddy congratulating Daniel at the very end after he wins the tournament? This was the only thing that made me think Freddy and Daniel remained friends.

John G. Avildson has made some great films, but his masterpiece is Karate Kid. I feel that the Karate Kid is miles ahead of ROCKY and is a far superior film.

My only problem with the series is that Daniel didn't need to go thru 3 girls. He gets Ally who dumps him for the UCLA jock, hooks up with Kumiko only to come back to LA without her and then tries to get friendly with Jessica who isn't really interested... ALL WITHIN A YEAR!

This is one of the flicks that helped me make the decision to get an all-region Daewoo.

I wish Columbia would release r1 anamorphic widescreen..

I liked the original and the sequel the same. Part II had a nice japanese authentic feel to it. Chozen was a great bad guy, and Kumiko was hot(IMO).

You are right about the part where his friends just leave him there on the beach.....what an @$$h073!!!

And who could forget Sensei John Kreese!!

PAIN DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS DOJO, DOES IT!?

FEAR DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS DOJO, DOES IT!?

DEFEAT DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS DOJO, DOES IT!?

WE DO NOT TRAIN TO BE MERCIFUL HERE! HERE, ON THE STREETS, OR IN COMPETITION....IF A MAN CONFRONTS YOU, HE IS THE ENEMY! AN ENEMY DESERVES NO MERCY! WHAT IS THE PROBLEM MR LAWRENCE!

One of my favorite sequences in Karate Kid was the whole tournament progression scene where you see him fighting his way up the bracket! That one dark complected asian guy had some moves on him! Great extra

Deacon from Bold and Beautiful is good in Part 3

Back to Part 1, the scene where Daniel has just finished his last tough chore and feels he is being used as a slave then gets shown how he has in fact learnt how to block is my fav scene, very powerful

All KK fans should read the IMBD.com user comments section on part III. It's some of the funniest stuff I've read about any movie. I won't just steal it, though I'm tempted to, the stuff about Machio's Butt being as big as a refrigerator is just pure gold.

And Espnpage2.com's Bill Simmons, formerly the Sports Guy over there, wrote some hilarious stuff too, regarding the strong homoerotic interplay between "Miagyi" and "Daniel-San". "Oh Daniel-Son, you want Miagyi show take off the pants?"

"Wax on, wax off" is right up there with "Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try." when it comes to best movie lines of all time.

THE KARATE KID PART II is my favorite of the series. He should have stayed with Kumiko (the wonderful Tamlyn Tomita) in my opinion.

Ironically, Ralph Macchio and I share the same birthday!

Thanks for the link that was even funnier than I remember. Just curious though, if you know, as mentioned in the article, what movie features the quote "Looks like it's the University of Illinois" ? And what does WATFO mean?

Ah, that was Tom Cruise in "Risky Business," when he thinks he blew the Harvard interview.

I have the screenplay to the original film and it ends with the beginning of part 2 with Miyagi teaching Kreese a lesson in the parking lot after the tournament. Was this filmed and cut out or was it filmed during part 2?

The beginning of part II was originally the ending of part I, but the filmmakers wanted to end part I on a "up" note..

Ah, veddy interestin'. That means the beginning of Part II was actually a deleted scene from Part I, which means that the cast around the parking lot didn't have to return during the shooting of Part II, after all.

I haven't watched 2 in a long time, but I remember the kids looking older, some with longer hair. So always thought it was a newly filmed part. Could be wrong though.

Anways I think Michael Ian Black said it best:

(doing jumping warm-ups)

"Who's the Karate Kid...I'm the Karate Kid!"

I can quote KK2 backwards and forwards and have all of the fight sequences memorized

Tamlyn Tomita

Never understood some of the television cuts in the film tho.. the whole "Tomi Village? This is Gadena(sp?) air-base... Sarge, Tomi Village?" is sometimes missing.

Loved KK and KK2.
I'm also not ashamed to admit that KK3 is one of my guilty pleasures. Imagine an evil zillionaire toxic waste dumper dedicating his time to exacting revenge on a teenage boy. Classic stuff.

In KK, when Daniel was in the arcade trying to reconcile with Ally, I wish he would've told her two snooty friends to go f**k themselves.

Honk!
