Well, I don't know if this is the reason, but Dune stunk. That's my guess. Although that's also my subjective, personal opinion. Greatness is in the eye of the beholder.

Yeah, I kind of feel this way too. SW is a fantasy plot and story put into a science-fiction setting. But it is not at its core a sci-fi story.

In SW, the "actual or potential scientific discoveries" were never part of the plot. In Star Trek, those discoveries are the ENTIRE plot. Like in Wrath of Khan, the Genesis Project was the main plot of that movie. So, I'm sad that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is not even a choice in the poll.

Personally, I am not ready to commit to two different definitions for "science fiction" and "sci-fi". Seems to me like something some nerdy fan boy made up. As far as I am concerned, "sci-fi" is just an abbreviation of "science fiction".

That's true. I normally call it sci-fantasy. But I think it's close enough to be included in the sci-fi category. It's close to the sci-fi category than it would be to the LOTR type fantasy category.

You can "commit" to whatever you want. But while you patronizingly refer to the SFWA as "nerdy fanboys", the separation between "science fiction" and "sci-fi" remains a distinct reality.

I don't know what the SFWA is, or what it stands for, and I consider myself lucky for that.

The truth of the matter is, you will not find different definitions of "Sci-fi" and "science fiction" in an English dictionary. So any distinctions between the two are soley created by obsessive fans of the genre, so don't get all prissy when someone disagrees with you or whoever this SFWA is. I feel I am entitled to my own opinion without being personally insulted. Perhaps my nerdy fanboys comment hit too close to home?

And comparing some assinine distinction between "sci-fi" and "science fiction" to actual science is just classic. Thanks for that.

Science Fiction Writers of America. Actually, it's the SFFWA now (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America).

Edit: Nope, you're right, it's just SFWA. I looked it up, and there was a hazy time when some people called it SFWA and others SFFWA. Now it's SFWA, but includes fantasy writers too.

If distinctions need to be made, make subgenres of science fiction. Saying there is a difference between "science fiction" and "sci-fi" is like saying that "tvs" and "televisions" are two different things.

Anytime. Incidentally, you should check out some of the more respected science fiction works by the "people who write the sh*t". You might see the difference between, say, "The Demolished Man" and "Bloodsuckers from Uranus".
