I think the only common link between the two themes in this thread is that both the filmmaker and one of the best NHL coaches are both named Hitchcock.

North by Northwest is one of his more popular pieces... it is also the most in line with current cinema trends (fast-paced, big budget, multiple locations, etc...) it happens to be my favorite hitchcock film, but that might just be because i love Cary Grant. (although, i still have yet to see To Catch a Thief, which might take the title, once i do...)
every Hitch film i've seen, i've adored. so, really, what it boils down to is that you will have to see all of them and decide for yourself which you like best, as opinions will be all over the board of which are his best.

Yes, Marnie is so underrated
But it is not for everyone.
My friend loves Hitch, but he cannot get into Marnie.
I for one love North by Northwest. You get that suspense from Hithcock's direction and the great acting and comedic skills from Mr. Suave Cary Grant.
IMO, Psycho is near the bottom of my Hitchcock list.

The Whirlwind Media disc I also have, but to be honest, I haven't watched Blackmail on it. I got it for Juno and the Paycock. That has to be the most uninteresting Hitchcock movie I have seen so far. I haven't seen any of his films not on dvd (other than Dial M For Murder), and I have found things to like in all of his early British films, except Paycock. Really really dull. I've kept the disc for completion's sake, but I think the 7 minute Betty Boop cartoon included on the disc is better than the movie I bought it for.
So I cannot state for certain which has a better transfer of Blackmail, but I am willing to bet the Laserlight is at least a little better based on their other Hitchcock discs, but if you are interested in having Juno too, and only want to buy Blackmail once, might as well get the Whirlwind one.

The 39 Steps, Rebecca, & Strangers on a Train are excellent film, however, Lady Vanishes is an interesting piece of cinematic art that will provide humor as well as suspense in a contemporary manner. Anyway, you cannot go wrong with Hitchcock on a rainy day.

Okay going to bump this thread.
I just started getting into the old Hitchcock. 30s-40s. His 50s-60s films are so great, I decided to delve into his old stuff.
I want to recommend anyone seeing Suspicion. What a great film. It got no recommendations from this thread so I will recommend it. Joan Fontaine is excellent (and the only person to win an acting Oscar, for this movie, in a Hitchcock film.) I liken this film to the overlong Rebecca. While being a good film, Rebecca could have easily trimmed a lot of the time off of its running. But - it is still a great film which won the Best Picture Oscar (the only Hitchcock film to do so).
Notorious is just a friggin classic.
