Movies that didn't age too well...

Hello fellow DVD maniacs!!

I just watched John Carpenter's "The Fog" and man did it blow!!

I don't wanna be too harsh but I remember this movie scaring the crap outta me when I was younger!! The acting stunk, the effects were cheesy and I fell asleep watching the SE!!

Am I getting too old (I'm 34) or sarcastic to enjoy classic movies that I enjoyed in my youth ?

Another example for me is "Clash of the Titans" ; I rented it on VHS a while back with some friends thinkin' "Man was this great when I was 14 yrs old" and just was saddened at the whole picture...

Did I lose the "child" in me or do I need to alter my mind before experiencing those movies again?

Any of you guys had the same experience?

I actually find Carpenters' early movies (Halloween, The Fog, The Thing) to be among the few that actually scare me nowadays. When that dude gets up off the table in the autopsy room, it always gives me the chills.

I do agree with Clash of the Titans though.

The Fog bored me when I was a kid. Now, I like it. Clash of the Titans did not age very well. I remember back when it came out it was a great movie, gnarly special effects. Now, it's as good as one of the old Sinbad movies at best!

Maybe the question isn't how well certain films age, but how well you aged...

I still enjoy The Thing , Halloween and the original Star Wars trilogy for example. The original Planet of the Apes is still fun for me after all those years.

I recently rented Jaws and was still impressed with the suspense but when you actually SEE that mechanic shark with lipstick , well it wasn't as scary as I imagined it the first time I saw it as a boy (stayed away from swimming pools and lakes for 2 weeks heh).

Some older movies I still enjoy in a campy way, others just feel dated...

It's painful to watch Easy Rider now.

You are now entering Tron . I really liked this movie when I was young but it just isn't watchable anymore. Once again though, it could be me and not the movie. Most horror movies that were edge-of-the-seat twenty years ago seem tame.

The Warriors - even though I love the movie to death, some of the NY gangs look like they came right out of a Fame musical or something.

In defense of TRON, I loved it when I was a kid and I STILL LOVE IT AT 24. The DVD is one of my favorites.

When I was a kid I liked Clash of the Titans, but even then I new its story sucked and that it was WAY too long. Now I find it unwatchable. TRON on the other hand rules all and is the supreme greatest.

I'm with you and I still love it at 56. It's "dated" but I do not think it suffers at all because of that. It's such a wonderful and entertaining fantasy take on the computer world of its time. And that has a lot to do with its charm which is still as much there as it ever was.

I thought House 2 was so awesome back when I first saw it as a kid, but I bought the House/House 2 DVD and watched and man, it blows so hard. I'm guess it probably blew back then too, but it just seemed so cool back in the 80's.

The Muppet Movie.

Loved it as a kid, worshipped it as a pre-teen, but now... what an abortion!

I think I'm the only person who thinks Clash of the Titans has aged well.

I would have to say Return of the Jedi is one I don't think has aged well. As a kid, it was my favorite of the trilogy, but after seeing it recently, I wouldn't want to watch it again.

The Muppet Movie is still great, I think. (Though I'm not really sure what "what an abortion" means.)

As for Tron, I only saw it for the first time last year, and it was quite boring. Having not seen it upon its release keeps me from liking it anywhere near as much as others do I think.

Neverending Story.

This was a favorite of mine during childhood, but I was quite dissapointed when I saw it years later as an adult.

the SE for the Fog was the first time i had actually sat down and watched the movie from start to finish and i had the exact opposite reaction as you Josh.
i never really gave it much credit when i was a kid, but found it to be a enjoyably spooky little yarn.
just watched COTT a few weeks ago, and while i've never considered it to be any special favorite of mine, i still enjoyed it (and i LOVE those first two Sinbad movies...7th Voyage, especially, is a classic!)
