Why do people invest so much interest in figuring out what is in the case? Is there an answer that could possibly be satisfying? Of course not.

It was in a standard aluminum briefcase that you can buy anywhere.

Plutonium or uranium. The IRA and all factions involved would have been very interested in that.
The case was too light to be made of lead and holding nuclear material.
