I don't think there are any stars anymore that will make people blindly march to the cineplex like there used to be.
Harrison Ford is great, if he is in a movie people want to see him in.
Arnie, only if hes playing a robot.
Tom Hanks, even his box office grosses are beginning to diminish.
Tom Cruise, has a following, but look how Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky and Minority Report performed way under expectation. All good movies, but not what his audience wanted to see him in.
Spielberg, once again his most recent releases have performed far below what the industry anticipated. A.I. tanked, Minority Report, the movie that should have sold itself barely made it into blockbuster status, whatever that really is now. They thought an ET rerelease would do as well as Star Wars, they were wrong. I respect him as a director far more than I did 20 years ago, but I think audiences are a little tired of him.
My guess is it matters only with whats going on right now in Hollywood, so if your name is Peter Jackson, your good as gold.
On second thought, Mel Gibson seems to have the midas touch right now. How else can you explain the success of the insipid What Women Want.

Can you throw in any more elitist catchphrases? Really, it won't sound too snotty.

Do you also find the expression "popcorn film" (or "popcorn flick") elitist as well?

I disagree with Peter Jackson ... I don't know, i appreciate the way he handled LOTR but i don't seem him being very bankable based on that success. I never heard of him before, and he looking at IMDB he hasn't done a whole lot either. Oh well.
As far as actors, i don't think any actor is an automatic hit anymore, the way Arnold used to be in the 80's. Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks are the most popular to me , along with Spielberg as a director.
