So....Now the problem begins for me and these "Best Film of" threads The further we get from today and the closer to the 40's and 30's, the longer my list becomes
My top ten:
01. Brücke, Die (1959) - It is my bet that this choice will surprise even those of you who know me best. This is IMHO the most realistic and fairest movie made about WWII, when concerned with a small local engagement. It is really more a drama than a war movie, although the battle scenes are perfectly done. When I watch this film I see realism......I say to myself, "This is as it actually happened." I can't recommend this film strongly enough! Buy it at DDD if you do, as they are a lot cheaper than buying directly from Belle & Blade (which I unfortunately did before I saw it at DDD).
02. Ben-Hur (1959)
03. North by Northwest (1959)
04. Some Like It Hot (1959)
05. Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
06. Suddenly, Last Summer (1959)
07. On the Beach (1959)
08. Our Man in Havana (1959) - Funniest movie of the year! I really want to see this on DVD. You will never think of a vacuum cleaner the same way again
09. Wreck of the Mary Deare, The (1959) - Heston and Cooper lead this very good cast.
10. Operation Petticoat (1959)
These are too good not to mention (in no particular order):
~ Horse Soldiers, The (1959)
~ FBI Story, The (1959)
~ Young Philadelphians, The (1959)
~ Imitation of Life (1959)
~ Pork Chop Hill (1959)
~ Mummy, The (1959)
~ Hound of the Baskervilles, The (1959)
~ Last Train from Gun Hill (1959)
~ Room at the Top (1959)
~ Rio Bravo (1959)
~ Summer Place, A (1959)
~ I'm All Right Jack (1959)
~ Compulsion (1959)
Movies also worthy of not which I enjoy (in no particular order):
~ Tingler, The (1959)
~ Angry Red Planet, The (1959)
~ Warlock (1959)
~ Up Periscope (1959)
~ Al Capone (1959)
~ Behemoth, the Sea Monster (1959)
~ Bat, The (1959) - Underrated light thriller with a very good cast.
~ Flesh and the Fiends, The (1959) - BTW: How's the DVD quality on this one?
~ Alias Jesse James (1959) - What a funny ending this one has!
~ Horrors of the Black Museum (1959) - I love it when Michael Gough plays it a lot over the top! You have to get a kick out of the way he says "AAAng-eLa" I'd love to see this on DVD.
~ Man Who Could Cheat Death, The (1959) - This isn't even on VHS
~ Return of the Fly (1959) - OK....So it's not nearly as good as the first.
~ 4D Man (1959) - This is much better than you would expect for a "B" movie. The DVD is very cheap ($5.99 in some places). At the price I advise you give it a try.
~ Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
~ Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) - Check-out the script to understand how much fun this movie really is. Plan 9 Script Your guess is as good as mine, Larry. But one thing's sure. Inspector Clay is dead...murdered...and somebody's responsible!
~ Night of the Ghouls (1959) - Edward D. Wood, Jr's "other" gem from 1959 OK.....So even some really BAD movies are fun to watch sometimes
A movie I heard a lot of good things about but have never seen:
~ Tiger Bay (1959)
Most disappointing movie of the year:
~ Devil's Disciple, The (1959) - This movie could have been "Great" rather than just "Good".
* So looking at my list, I'm guessing I figure it was a good year for movies
Cary likes to wave to Dimension X every chance he gets.

No big surprise here... Hitchcock's dominance has definitely begun. We'll see if he can make it 3 in a row in '58!
1) North by Northwest (16 votes)
2) Some Like it Hot (4.5)
3) Ben-Hur (4)
4) The 400 Blows (2)
This one's obviously ready to close!
