Gandalf is lazy and kind of a jerk. He's kind of like Glinda, the Witch of the North from the Wizard of Oz. At the end of ROTK he'll tell Frodo that he's had the power to destroy the ring all along. The ring is actually chocolate with a gold wrapper and all he had to do was eat it.
