The Two Towers rakes in $26M opening day

http://www.reelsource.com/main/main.php (see right side)

I don't know how much it made last opening day but according to IMDB seems to have brought in about $93M.

Thoughts?

(I'm just happy it did almost 100x what Santa Clause 2 did that day)

Update: I've been informed that Reel Source may not be the best source for info, so we'll have to see what Showbizdata and Onering say...

Real numbers seem to have put it in at roughly $26M, with international box office at $16M [view source]

Second Update: Real numbers don't come in until Friday and there are rumors that the numbers for Wednesday are underestimated, so we'll se..

FotR made 18.2m, which at the time was the third biggest Wednesday opening. Here's the original thread about it:

It's an even better take when you consider that it can only be shown 3 times a day, per screen.

Nah, at least on opening day, it's probably shown 4 times per screen. The midnight showing and then 3 regular showings.

Is the $93 mill on IMDB worldwide or something?

Boxoffice Mojo has it listed at an estimated 26,000,000. It'll easily make $100,000,000 by Sunday.

Its setting a good pace for sure, but I don't know about $100M. Thursday and Friday numbers should be lower because of no mid-night shows and the real die-hards have already seen it opening day.

The IMDB figure (which was actually $94 million) represents the totals for the entire first week. Because Christmas day fell on a Tuesday, IMDB included the totals for Monday and Tuesday as part of the "opening weekend." The daily breakdown of the opening weekend looks like this:

$18,214,000 - Wed. (12/19)
9,704,000 - Thurs.
14,233,000 - Fri.
17,463,000 - Sat.
15,516,000 - Sun.
7,334,000 - Mon.
11,570,000 - Tues. (Christmas)

And the totals look like this:

$75,129,468 - Wed-Sun
47,211,490 - Fri-Sun
66,114,741 - Fri-Tues
94,032,719 - Wed-Tues

OK, I admit it, I spend way too much time on this kind of stuff.

Let's do some math, here. It made around 26 million on opening day. Now, it won't hit those numbers today just b/c it's not opening day. But I fully expect Friday and Saturday to be just as big. So just on those 3 days, that's around 75 million. Now, if you factor in Thursday and Sunday, it should easily surpass the 100 million dollar mark by Sunday night.

Let's just do some simple extrapolation of the figures from FOTR.

Opening day for FOTR was $18.2 million. Opening day for TTT was $26 million. That's an increase of about 44%.

Over the first five days, FOTR pulled in $75.1 million. Increase that figure by 44% and you get:

$108.1 million.

If the new film performs consistently with FOTR over the weekend (relative to its opening day), then a nine-digit opening bow is assured.

Another way to look at it:

If it did $26M on Wednesday, it is safe to say it will do half that Thursday, say $14M. And it will easily surpass $60M for the weekend.

I say it could do $125M through Sunday.

Actually no, on top of the midnight screening, which I'm sure counted for opening day takes, some theaters had 7:30 AM and other early morning showings on opening day too. I at first though that moviefone.com had a mistake in its PM/AM listings, but fandango had the same times listed.

I think those early showings were only for opening day though. And now that I think of it, I'm sure they were added to get better opening day stats.

here's the numbers from www.boxofficemojo.com

Wednesday
$26,159,972

Thursday
$13,878,712

So, $40,038,684 for the two day's release. I can easily see this topping $100,000,000 for the weekend.

Friday's projected numbers: $19,500,000, putting it at a projected $59,539,000 for three days.

Saturday should be about $25,000,000, which would put it around $85,000,000.

$85,000,000 + $15,000,000 today and we've got $100,000,000... Not bad for a movie NOT about Peter Parker...

Well, estimates are on Saturday it only raked it 22,850,000 to put it at 82,339,000 for the 4 days. It will have to have a strong Sunday today to make the $100,000,000 mark for the weekend.

As I said prior to the 18th, I think it's physically impossible for the movie to make $100 mil for the 5-day period, but it will certainly come close. It broke records again and surpassed the original, so that's already beyond expectations or hopes.

And according to www.boxofficemojo.com, "Two Towers" has made an estimated $61.5 million this weekend, putting it at $101.5 million for the five days since it opened. Yowza.

Of course these are estimates, but Box Office Mojo is predicting it will surpass 100 million for the weekend.
