Finally saw The Ring...too bad it sucks!

This movie was terrible! I was looking forward to seeing it and dropped the 8 bucks because I had only heard good things...It started off decent and had a lot of potential with the scene at the beginning where teh closet opens...but it was just terrible...a lot of stuff happened that would never happen in real life (and I don't mean the supernatural stuff you smart-a$$es). Also, the ending was just stupid...and I just hated most of it!

Wow, one of my favorite movies this year. I thought it was great. The only movie I actually paid to see twice in the Theater (ok, I saw LOTR twice but one was free),

i agree. it had a creepy moment or two, but for the most part, you can hardly classify it as a horror film. most of the film is just drab drama leading to an ending that i just didn't care about anymore by the time they got there.

I saw it and liked it a lot. Maybe thats because I went in knowing pretty much nothing about the movie and with very low expectations. Creeped the hell out of me as well. But hey differant strokes

Bad date or something Daredevil?
Took a lot of energy to post a whole thread saying it sucked.

Suppose you like Brucheimer movies and slasher flicks too huh?

I agree with you totally. I saw it opening night after reading several good reviews proclaiming it the "finest horror movie in years" and sat there wondering what the hell was up.

I guess too many people are easily entertained by mediocre garbage.

What does that have to do with anything? I've got both Bruckheimer and slasher flicks in my DVD collection and I loved The Ring.

I do wish that we could have somehow enforce a moratorium on the word "suck" being used on the internet. The only valid retort to the statement "That sucked" is "No it didn't" since it's a judgement call. If instead of using "suck" as a catch all phrase, we had to resort to talking about the pacing of the film, the depth of the characters, the use of style over substance, etc. then we might be able to have debates about a film and find some common ground. Until then I'll just say...

No it didn't!

Amazing.

Since I first saw it this is the first time I've heard ANYONE saying it was less than spectacular. Everyone I talked to absolutely loved it, real life and on the internet.

but it was just terrible...a lot of stuff happened that would never happen in real life
And that makes it a bad movie because....?

Suspension of belief can only go so far. I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment, but have seen other movies that weren't supernatural but had ridiculous storylines (ie. Enough) and that certainly makes a bad movie.

I am sad to hear that you did not like it, I thought it was pretty good. But the original was better to me, since the idea was original. I hope you like the next film you will see.

Cheers ,

Uh.....maybe we should move this to the "mature" forum if we're going to debate that suggestion.

As toThe Ring - I liked the first 45 minutes or so, but as far as I was concerned, it went totally downhill after that. And the easiest way for me to sum up my reaction to the movie is to say.....it sucked.

Nope. The original was based on a novel.

I agree that the film was pretty much a gimmick leading up to the end, but it was a nice twist.

I think, since it was described as a horror movie, people went in expecting more gore and more scares, but it wasn't that kind of movie.

As for all the snobs praising the Japanese "original" that was still a "Sixth Sense" copycat, and this one was more effective. Some people are too quick to extol the virtues of anything that isn't American.

Anyway, this was at least as good as "Insomnia," "Signs," and "The Others."

I don't think I'll buy the DVD, but it was fun to watch.

psst... Ringu (The japanese "Ring") came out in 1998... The Sixth Sense came out in 1999.

I like the remake better, but -as you can tell- that's my personal preference.

I just saw it tonight after hearing all the hype... just let me say that was one steaming pile of crap. Not scary one bit, and it used cliche slasher flick tactics to make people jump (which I didn't once). Jacking up the soundtrack and showing a couple disturbing things does not a horror film make. The plot was laughable, and the acting was forgettable. It's like some one said "Hey, how can we make a movie with an overly mature kid and some ****ed up images so we can capitalize on the Sixth Sense?" Ooooh, I made a copy, now I get to live... how lame can you get. They went through that whole ****ing ordeal just to have the kid say "Don't help her?" Well there's some information they could have used 7 days ago! Hook up a couple VCRs, and send copies to people you hate for Christmas... The End.

I agreed with marty's comments, the first 45 minutes or so showed potential and I thought it could be good. And to say that all I'm gonna do is say the movie sucked but have not opinions why...Well here are some of my problems with the film. The characters were literally stupid. They would do dumb things that any normal person would have steered clear of. Too much would happen in the span of a day. They never explained or even talked at all about the making of the tape or where it came from or who made it. Some of it was predictable, which isn't that bad, because a lot of movies are. No kid acts like the way that one did and says the type of things he did...he's too young. The ending drug out, but I am glad that it didn't end like
Spoiler:
ll those other "dead people" movies with the living person helping the dead person.
Didn't build enough suspense to be truly scary, just used 'scary movie' tactics as mentioned by JTH. So...TSCOTT, how is that for some discussion about the film?

I will admit that I love horror films. I don't consider this a true horror film. I love all types of scary movies from Italian horror to Halloween to Evil dead even to stuff like the sixth sense. But this just didn't do it for me. I didn't really have high expectations either. Iheard it was good...no one I had talked to, or on the internet said it was less than good. But I didn't really go in expectating a great film. Too bad for me I guess...oh wait too bad for you all for liking this piece of crap...hehe.

First things first : Ringu came out BEFORE 6th sense did, the Books on which these movies are based came out WAY before 6th Sense...so I could argue that 6th Sense took its queues from the Japanese books.

Also : Making a copy is pure and utter brilliance, Simplistic almost to a fault. You do understand what that means yes? That means the curse NEVER ends, you make a copy to save your ass and curse someone else in return...It guarantees that the curse will never end. Works for me. If there were trully curses in our world, what better curse could there be? A never ending one sure seems good to me

Care to elaborate here?

Hrmm, Welcome to Planet Earth DareDevil...I didnt have any problems at all figuring out how the tape was made.

I think this movie is one of the best horror movies ever made.

That being said, I do think that the curse could end if there was someone who was good enough to sacrifice him or herself to stop the cycle. For example, say a person had pancreatic cancer (pretty much a 100% mortality rate), and the person accepted the tape made by the kid, then the person with cancer could watch it and just die with the curse ending with him/her, considering the cancer is a quick death sentence in its own right.
