Is "Mulan" any good?

Heard that the writers for Lilo & Stitch were heavily involved in Mulan. I know the DVD is OOP, but I know a couple of places that still have a copy or 2 laying around. The problem is that they are Suncoats and $29.99..

So before I pay retail for a DVD for the first time in like.. YEARS.. I was wondering what other people opinions were of this one. How does it compare to other Disney flicks.. have heard that it was the best from the Pocahontas -> Tarzan era, but I'm not sure if that's saying much hehe..

I liked Mulan a lot.

Some people say it is sappy and such, but, for me parts of it really worked.

I especially liked "I'll make a man out of you" song - yes this is the more traditional Disney musical type animation.

That said, I think it's a pretty good disney flick.

Now, opinion: MUCH better than Pocahontas, not as "spiffy" as Tarzan, but I ENJOYED Mulan the most.

Spoiler:
cutting her hair
render me ineligible to make comments on this movie?

I thought the animators missed the boat by not integrating chinese art into the design more. The ad campaign had better art than the movie. Also the music sucks. This (along w/ Hunchback) is the shining example of Disney making something a musical even if it doesn't need to be.

...also did I mention a certain Eddie Murphy is in this...

I quite liked it... pretty enjoyable.

After the avalance the film kind of falters though...

I did like it at the very start, I thought the mongols were very well done.

Thanks for the feedback.. I may try to throw hints to some friends about a possible Christmas gift in the Mulan DVD.. (if I didn't loathe Blockbuster so much, I would rent it)..

I thought that Hunchback worked very well as a musical (minus a few songs).

They did integrate quite a bit of chinese art design in the backgrounds, characters, and buildings. Also I think they captured the spirit and tradition of Chinese culture (I should know at least a little bit I am second generation).

I guess I think they should have done it more. Did you see the print ads. They were like ancient chinese art. The final film had some chinese look to it, but it also had a generic nondescript cartoon look that was just dull looking

Caught this on DVD. Loved It. Immensely. Lea Salonga's version of "Reflection" is much better than Christina Aguilera's. But I gotta give it to CA...at least she had clothes on and looked fairly normal.

BTW...Eddie was fine.

Did you know they are working on Mulan II AND III? Those crazy people at Disney. Though, I will admit.. it is getting harder and harder to skip out on Return to Neverland.

I'm SOOOOO hoping the Stitch spinoff movie and sequel will be good..

Love this one. Highly Recommended. Another thumbs up for the Lea Salonga version of Reflection.

Mediocre, like most of Disney's recent animated features.

Haha.. I know.. but from what I read they are actually making movies out of them (both the Mulan sequels, the Stitch spinoff, and the Stitch sequel).. I know the Disney sequels that apparently really blow are the ones that are 2 or 3 short stories thrown together to make a "feature"..

If Mulan turns out good as people here seem to agree, I'd have hope of the sequels at least being decent, and if they aren't, I'm already going in full-force knowing that they have the potential to be crap-tacular.

Buuut man.. even in that mindset.. I hope they do Stitch good, that little guy is my hero.

Yep. Lea Salonga has confirmed that she has finished recording the singing voice for Mulan and I believe most of the voice cast also come back to reprise their roles.

I loved Mulan. Disney was (almost) firing on all cylinders with this one.

And I think Eddie Murphey was 100X better and funnier as Mushu the Dragon than that stupid, lame-ass Donkey from Shrek.

While I loathe Disney "Shake 'n Bake" DTV sequels [witness : http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...ht=rant+disney] If the animation is the same and the voice talent comes back, there might be hope for this...

Wouldn't it be funny if Disney did a straight from the book adaptation of Mulan? Like have that male soldier impregnate her during their travels towards battle and have her wear armor to hide the fact that she was starting to show. HAHAHA. Sorry, its late.

Agree! I thought Murphy's performance in "Shrek" was routine and a rehash of his dragon character in "Mulan". Which was at least funny.

Pixiboi, I really enjoyed "Mulan". It's one of Disney's better efforts from the past 10 years. However, I do think $29.99 is rather steep. Maybe you can find it used at half.com. Or better yet, rent it first from Blockbuster or Netflix. But I'd give it *** or ***1/2 out of ****. The animation is quite good.

I got mine almost for free at reel.com with reel trivia coupon and some other coupons stacked 3 years ago....Ahhh...miss those days!

Edited to add:
The movie was good for a single viewing. Not good for repeated viewings. Rent it.
