Best Film of 1962 (ongoing survey)

A quick note:
  • Some people are now saying it's before their time, so they haven't seen enough to vote... If you've seen even one film that you really liked from the year, and thus you consider it the best you've seen (even if it's the only one you've seen), go ahead and vote. Heck, I was born in '82, so yeah, it's before my time too, but I've still got a favorite from most years back at least through the 70s, even if I've just seen 2 or 3 from the year.

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1962 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1962 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

I've only seen 7 films from 1962, but there are some very good ones in here, including my favorite which I may change to a 10/10 after my next viewing. I felt it was right on the edge of a 10 when I first saw it... one of the best political thrillers ever made:

1) The Manchurian Candidate - 9/10
2) To Kill a Mockingbird - 9/10
3) Lawrence of Arabia - 9/10
4) Lolita - 8/10
5) Peeping Tom - 8/10
6) Cléo from 5 to 7 - 7/10
7) Dr. No - 6/10

Now I could be very wrong about putting Peeping Tom in with 1962, but there are conflicting dates everywhere on it, and I just don't know which year to include it. For instance, it's listed as 1960 on the imdb since it premiered in the UK that year. But the imdb gives a US opening as 1962 (which would normally be what to go by), while Ebert and other reviewers speak of it as a 1960 film. So I just don't know, maybe someone else has a better idea?

Oscar for Best Picture:
Lawrence of Arabia - WINNER
Longest Day, The
Music Man, The
Mutiny on the Bounty
To Kill a Mockingbird

Other very notable films from 1962:
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
Jules and Jim
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
Cape Fear
Birdman of Alcatraz
The Miracle Worker

and don't forget Kurosawa's Yojimbo which opened in the US in '62.

So many well remembered classics are from this year! I do forsee a close race here, so please I beg of you, do not go with your second favorite choice just because you think it has a chance of winning and your first choice doesn't. That defeats the main purpose of the thread!

That out of the way, I'm definitely interested to see how this one turns out.

Wow what a landmark year for films.

I'll have to go with The Manchurian Candidate with Lawrence of Arabia as runner-up.

Great year, but no real contest. The decision is easy:

1. Lawrence of Arabia
2. To Kill a Mockingbird
3. The Manchurian Candidate
4. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
5. Birdman of Alcatraz
6. Days of Wine and Roses
7. Dr. No
8. Lolita
9. Hatari!
10. Cape Fear

I vote for the Manchurian Candidate

Peeping Tom is a 1960 film not 1962.

If To Kill A Mockingbird wins I'll die.

This is an extremely tough year to pick. I am voting for

The Manchurian Candidate

and at the same time, I feel "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' , "Lawrence of Arabia", "Lolita", "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane", "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and "Birdman of Alcatraz" are deserving of consideration.

I also have my picks ready for 1958-1961 and I spend less time deciding these combined than I did on 1962!
